I bought this motor for very cheap from a local member. The motor had 35,000 flawless miles prior to this. The valve (which one is uncertain) dropped in the #1 cylinder at highway speeds, and the following damaged ensued. The head is absolutely trashed. I can't even get the valve stems out. The dropped valve(s) punched three holes in the piston. Fortunately, there is no damage to the cylinder wall. There are one or two micro dings in the cylinder wall about 1/4" from the top. I am not sure yet if this is a problem. I am going to take the head to a local engine shop and get their opinion.

The intake cam is in okay condition. The center intake lobe needs to be cleaned up a bit. The exhaust cam appears to be okay. The intake cam cover is toast as well. The valve cover is also damaged at the spark plug seal.

The plan is to rebuild the motor (on a budget) and put it into a Yamaha Raptor frame. I have already bought a used complete cylinder head. Due to the high mileage, I am thinking of replacing the crank and rod bearings, and probably the clutch pack. I need to inspect the connecting rod on the #1 cylinder and replace this piston obviously. I will also be replacing the piston rings. Should I replace all of the pistons? They appear to be in good condition.

Any info/links on building these motors would be very helpful. This will be my 5th full engine build, but first inline-4. The others were a YFZ450, two LS1's, and a Cobra 5.0.

Enjoy the pics... :yuk:

If you can tackle a YFZ450 you can do it no problem. Those things are a beast to work on.

DAMN! I spoke too soon. I looked at the cylinder this morning in the daylight and found some very minor dings in the cylinder wall. I took it to my local engine builder and he said a hone would remove the high points of the dings, but not the low points. So instead of messing with it I put the cylinder on eBay and bought a used one that I will have honed and cleaned.
