I just started really doing this a bit ago - and don't worry I'm planning on keeping the 50th anni scheme on my new body work :p I like my yellow thank you very much haha.

Anyways it's actually not tooo bad. You'll need the headlights, fairing stay, air ducts, the subframe makes the rear an easy swap but technically the new bodywork will fit the 04-06 subframe with some custom fiberglassing (from what I've seen). To me I'd rather do spacers than bodywork, and it's a stupid easy swap.

From there I've just been mocking up the body work and determining where I'd need to make custom mount relocations. It's just time and patience, but between the body work, new forks and brakes, pulling the motor and doing work on that, and some other misc things, progress on the body has been an as-I-feel-like-it pace.
 
So in essence, a 07 conversion can be done easily if you keep the 04 rear... subframe tail and light... is a new tank needed for the frontal update?

Don't need to swap out the tank or airbox.

It's been easier for me to do the swap by using the 07/08 subframe. The taillight mounts perfectly, and so does the rest of the tail section, without any modification, save some spacers where it bolts to the main frame. Someone on the forum did the swap without the subframe, but had to do some fiberglass work to the tail to make it all work.

It's easier and faster to fabricate some simple spacers (or find some) than doing fiberglass work, so that's the route I went.

Don't kid yourself though. While it's all relatively straightforward, it's not cheap per say. Even with Chinese manufactured fairings, they will still set you back a good 500-800 bucks, a subframe will cost around 150-400 depending on condition and luck, 08 fairing stay ~ 50-150 depending on quality or condition, I've seen some as high as ~300. You'll need 08 headlights which, depending on condition, can cost an easy 600-800 for a pair. Your old windscreen won't work either, so you'll need a new one for that. New rear seat cowl or OEM seat (stock one will work with some modification, isn't as clean though). New or used rear taillight from an 08, some miscellaneous wiring as well.

Edit> That's a slight lie, it was a bit fiddly getting the wiring harness and electronics ran the way I wanted in the 08 subframe.
 
i just finished this modification, and it's not a simple swap. Lots of patience is needed to make this work and a couple custom brackets as well.

1.) New Fairing stay needed
2.) New headlights
3.) Body panels for font end *if only do the front conversion
3. b.) 07 subframe for rear conversion
4.) buy the new brackets for the lower fairing to connect to frame by the rear wheel, it's easy and cheap on babbits, as well as front air intake tube, gaskets, and bolts.
5.) buy the bracket to attach side fairing to the bike. you will have to modify it but it will give you proper spacing and save you some time in the long run. Drill new mounting hole in bracket you buy, bolt on... and done.

most kits you buy will have the intake tubes but not the full piece that connects to the front fairing. So buying the rest of it is a must unless your lucky to find a salvage yard that has them.

Make bracket to fit lower fairing to engine. The original piece connected much lower and the new one lines up with nothing. Unless you want to buy the new engine covers at $60+ a piece, just make the bracket.

Assemble front fairing, intake tube, headlights, and windscreen
In front fairing stay, enlarge the mounting points, it's not going to line up perfectly and a little wiggle room is needed. Place from fairing stay, and assembled front end on the bike and lightly bolt on.

Assemble the complete intake.

Mount lower fairing, loosely

Assemble complete side fairing

Mount side fairing on left side, it's easier
Attempt the right side, notice you have to move around wires and tuck a hose or two, potentially (depending on how good your kit is) grind a bit of the fairing to make it fit.
Start at the back of the fairing, work towards the front fairing and lastly bolt into the bottom fairing.

Attach insert to front faring that covers your wires.

Tighten everything up, curse a bit about how long it all took and how many days of riding you missed while doing this project... and grab your helmet and go
 
I have some pictures, I will upload them shortly to this. A lot of it is common sense stuff but in the long run, I ran into a few problems that others may have not. Could have been the body kit I ordered, or a million other factors that go into beating a square peg into a round hole.

I will try to make sense of these pictures, but should be common sense.

1.) no hole to bolt into, need to make bracket - simple bracket to pull fairing into the body a bit
2.) hoses and wires in the way, need to move things around, remove tie straps, and last but not least, if all else fails, gently grind the fairing to make it work (this problem is not duplicated on the other side)
3.) finished product (minus the bottom bolt being inserted since I hadn't installed the custom bracket yet in that picture)

Looks good - glad to see you finished it. I've been away from the world a bit, sorry I missed your most recent PM.

You did your right side fairing a lot better than mine. I had some crappy fitment issues but ended up over-correcting them a bit to fit that coolant pipe. I'll eventually replace the bodywork with OEM pieces next year maybe. Then I can make sure everything fits the way I want it.

Some newer pics.

You can see a few spots where I still needed to adjust where things mounted - progress has been slow on the last little bits since I could ride it, and our season is short. I'll tighten it all up over the winter.

Bought my fairings from a store on Ebay. $400 for a whole kit non painted. In retro I should have bought then from China and they would have been painted and decaled for the same price. The decals aren't cheap either so I am having a friend custom make me a scheme for the bike.

I also found that the more pieces I buy from "stores" online the more things I have found wrong. My fairing stay only had one mounting hole drilled... I had to do the other one myself but it didn't matter since i was enlarging the holes anyway to get the best angle fit with the new fairings. Also the body kit itself had a few rough edges that needed work. Overall, I'm just glad it's done. Give yourself about a week to put this together if you have bought everything... and I stress everything you are going to need. Otherwise, you will see what you're missing as you go along and it just takes more and more time.

I will post more pics of the process later.

I ordered fairings from China in the matte black with gold decals.

I stuck to OEM everything on the rest - saves a lot of trouble.

Eh the chinese fairings had plenty of their own fitment quibbles.

520 conversion... what is it?
190/55... why?

rookie modification questions. I work on cars more the bikes so this is just something I am not familiar with. I generally don't mess with stuff if it's running great and looks even better. So, I'm sure there's a reason and it's easier to ask then dig through the forum.
 
well your on the wrong thread. make sure you do a search and you will get an answer quick. please dont de-rail the thread. but the 2008 front forks and breaks are sometimes done for an upgrade to oem if that makes sense. many people get better forks from ohlins so they sell their old ones which is a better upgrade and cheaper for a person with an older bike.
520 is basically done for weight reduction. the current chain is 530. they say with 520 since its lighter it will take less energy to move it.
190/55 is a bigger tire then stock well for the 06 i know. i went with 55 for reasons such as more accurate speedo and also better handling and stability.

I feel ya - I'd done the car thing for years before jumping to bikes. Way more fun though.

The 2008 forks are arguably the best forks out of the factory R1 gear. My original right fork was leaking, and since I was pulling the motor anyways, I decided to just upgrade forks while at it. The nearest track is over 300 miles away from me and I just will never have the time to get to it, so jumping for Ohlins or something super adjustable and trick didn't make any financial sense, but a set of 08 forks with 6 piston brakes (versus 4 piston stock) for under 800 bucks? Good deal. Plus I get to rebuild and sell off the old forks and brakes and make a good chunk of that back.

The 520 conversion, as said above, is lighter. How much of a difference it makes I can't say, though in pure weight it was a fairly significant savings. Since I was doing the -2 in the front anyways to partially compensate for the taller rear tire and to smooth out the long gearing a bit, it made sense to go to a 520 while at it.

The 55 series tire in the rear is a major improvement over the 50 series on the stock 04-06. I'd hit up a search on the tire section for all of it, but right off the bat there's a quicker initial lean in and a broader contact patch to work with at lean.
 
i have a '05 and I want to put on the '07-'08 side fairings on it. im not interested in changing the seat. basically will the bolts line up???
 
naw i mean the side fairings and the front. the rear doesnt connect to those anywhere.........
