Hello

Has anybody come across the following issues with the starter motor:-

The magnets which are glued (Bonded as Yamaha state) to the casing are not glued anymore, looks like this will become a problem for more of us overtime.

Yamaha have stated that a new starter motor is £525 (UK), that dos not include the retailers markup or fitment.

Looking into Glue which could be used, problem is the temperature (as the starter motor is located next to the Head) and removing the old glue without braking the magnets.

Hoping to hear from more riders, as i am trying to found out how many have failed so far, As Yamaha have stated that there is NOT a problem with the starter motor magnets failing due to glue (bonding).

Hello
I'm sorry to bring you bad news but this failure is well known by yamaha and affects all R1 from 04 to 08 and some FZ1 models too it's major design flaw and sooner or later all will fail leaving you with peaces of magnets all over your engine.
Yamaha have a new redesign rotor assy to prevent this...
Just search the forums or google for R1 stator failure and you'll see what I mean.

I've never seen that on the starter. Mine died a while back due to unnecessary strain (but that's another story). They're not cheap unfortunately, so good luck with a potential repair! Any chance to find a rebuilt one on eBay?

There are plenty on ebay at present, but your paying anything from £50 to £200 on a second starter motor which will fail the same way.
Looking at the design, if that's what you can call it. many more will start to fail. Looking back at the last time i started the bike, it sounded like the battery was low on charge. but it started. Then the next time i tried to start the bike, all that happen was complete short of the electrical system when the starter button is pressed. Bump start required.
