07 R1 valve adjustment

I was wondering when other people were getting their valves adjusted and how far off they were? I know the book says 24400mi and that seems like a long time to not touch them, but I have a friend with a 04 fz1 that has 50000mi on it and the valves have never needed to be adjusted. My R1 has 13400mi on it and I've noticed the valvetrain starting to get louder over the last couple thousand miles. I thought it was in my head till my buddy bought a 08 R1 with 2500mi and it seems much quieter. Also How much have you guys paid at the shop to have a valve adjustment? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

I recently did my valve adjustment.
All valves where on the thight side of the range, on cyl 1 and 4 both exhaust valves where to tight and needed readjustment.
As far as i know valve play on these engines rarely go larger(?)
(Check out the "#4 intake valve faliure" thread) Link
Stock they use valve shime with 0,01 mm increment while the new ones have 0,05mm.
Have no idea how much it cost to get done, did it my self.

On my -05 R1 valve play just got better and better over time, but that's anoher engine (5-valve).

What is the date code on the side of the bike on the white tag? If it is a build date of 02/07 it sounds like you have a bad valve. I have the very same thing going on with my 07 R1. Only 9,379 miles and the bike is now junk. Yamaha knows about this but is unwilling to do a recall. I will never buy a Yamaha again! This is my 5th Yamaha, and it will now be my last. How could Yamaha sell something they know is going to fail? The cost to fix this valve problem with the 07 R1 from the shop is about $3,500. I am going to sell my R1 for scrap!

OP - This may sound a bit odd, but which way did you turn the crank when going between cylinders? The service manual says counter clockwise, but the cam chain has a fit and attempts to jump a tooth when I tried it.

I assumed it was a misprint and went ahead with turning the crank clockwise (like every other Yamaha motor I've worked on) but I always like to confirm with people that have done it.

Thanks.

Oops, saw your post very late.
As you said i had to turne the crank clockwise (seen from the right side of the bike), just as you said the cam chain would jump the cogs when turning ccw.
Don't know if it stop doing that after first start but the tensioner is oil pressure assisted so it's possible it will keep jumping over if you turn ccw without oilpressure?
