BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - A motorcycle racer and an employee of Barber MotorSports park were killed Friday morning in a crash on the race track.

According to Birmingham Police, several riders were running a test for a motorcycle race when one of the riders hit an employee on the track.

The employee had reportedly went onto the track to remove a dead bird from the track when he was hit.

Both the employee and the rider were killed.

RIP. :(

Wouldn't running out onto a hot track like that be some kind of breach of safety protocol?

**** :( RIP..... i hate to place blame on anyone, but the people who run the track should red flag the session to stop the riders to remove the bird. running out on track despite if you think it's clear is just all bad.

it would take one minute of safety to prevent such a terrible tragedy.

Yeah at any TD I marshall/control at, one of the first things I tell the CW's is NOT to cross a hot track. If something is so important, then throw a red and we can get right to it.

Barber typically has a very good organization they use to run the track events. I don't know if it's always the same group or not, but this seems out of character for them. I would hope there's a little more to this story, but you never know.
