I've just had my 12,000 mile (20,000km) service done on my 2004 model R1 and the mechanic has asked me to take the bike back so he can examine the clutch which, in his opinion, is too noisy. I haven’t noticed any excessive noise and have had no problem with the clutch whatsoever, it feels smooth and has never slipped or caused a problem. However, given what the mechanic said, I'm curious as to what the problem could be. I'm not worried because any work would be carried out under warranty but is there anyone out there who may have an idea as to what might be causing the excessive noise?

R1 clutches are noisy by nature...earlier models sounds like there are rocks in there sometimes if you bring your ear close to it.

The clatter can be lessened a lot if the TB are synch perfectly, and if you raise the idle a wee bit.

I hear what you're saying but I'm sure the mechanic is aware of the fact that R1 clutches are inherently noisy. If it were just the normal noise, I'm sure he wouldn't think anything of it but he specifically asked me to take the bike back so he can fully examine it. I assume therefore, that there must be something wrong with it. When I asked him, he said he's not sure but he just doesn't like the sound it makes and would like to have a thorough look.

2004 R1 Noisy Clutch Update

The mechanic has had a chance to examine the clutch now and says that it is the clutch basket that is faulty. They are now putting a warranty claim in to Yamaha and will order the parts necessary to carry out the work. I hope it will get sorted out quickly as I hate the feeling of riding around knowing that something needs to be fixed on the bike, even if it's not really a safety issue and cannot cause any further damage. Hats off to the dealer and the mechanic for noticing the problem and being so proactive about getting it fixed!

Good luck, hope it all works out w/ Yamaha!

Just out of curiosity, anything out of the ordinary with the clutch basket? Do you clutch wheelies, drag race, anything like that? Did you have the infamous sticky clutch like other 04 owners? Just curious, sure a few guys who do would like to know. Good luck and thanks for the info!

Is it normal for a yamaha clutch to be a little noisy at idle? I installed new plates(friction and steel) and adjusted it as to the guides in the shop manual. But it seems to be a little noisy and when in neutral on the stands the rear wheel spins but gets slower and stops as the temp gets to normal operating temp. Is this a problem or a m I okay...also there is 0 miles on the clutch....just spinning the rear tire on the stands to about 35 to make sure it shifts okay!

Yes,the turning and stopping motion when it heats up is all normal.

As if its normal about the noise...always depends, some noises are normal since its a mechanical device, but up to a point...

There is a thread in here where the owner of a 04 had his checked and they replace the basket...

Old post :)

Always a good thing to dig them out since that type of old post can serve most well.

Worn out plates would need more and more adjustments as time goes by...i`d even say weekly adj.

Warped plates,i dont think so either.

Loose basket,worn bearings....possible.
I`ve seen a couple with some slack from the company...it happen.
If lucky, you might simply need a shim.

Right now that type of sound doesnt bother me much as the Duc has a dry clutch...impossible to notice that :)

i blew the clutch on my 04 into about ahundred pieces, only took about a years worth of wheelies. took about a week to flush them all out the motor. i put a dapper clutch in and for the first month or so it made alot of noise at idle, and would spin the tire in neutral. gone now.... what can you do.
