I need some info on rebuilding the clutch in my r1. I purchased all new genuine Yamaha parts: (fiber and metal plates, springs, clutch cable). I removed the old clutch and replaced it in the same order that I though they came out, but something still isn't right. I went to my dealership and had them to give me a diagram of the clutch breakout, and after taking the clutch back out to see if I had put something in wrong, it looked just the same as the diagram. On the diagram it looks like two fiberplates and two metal plates back to back, but the diagram is unclear. When I tested the cluch, its as if I do not even have a clutch, so something is clearly wrong. Any information that you may have to solving this problem will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Again

When you install the last friction plate it should behalf a phase out. This means the 'teeth' sit in the cut-outs in the top of the clutch basket and are out of alignment with all the other plates. Then make sure the pressure plate is located correctly and bobs your uncle. Before you put the clutch arm on put the bike in gear and check that the clutch is engaged, that saves fiddling with the arm and the finding out the clutch was assembbled wrong!

I know how a traditional clutch is installed, I have installed many and I always take it out and stack tham up and reinstall just like they came out, but for some reason it was wrong, I went to my dealer and got a print out (blow up diagram) Of which the diagram shows two metal plates and 2 friction plates on each other, I did the plate spacing right like you picture shows but still no luck, Been working 14 hour days, so that might have taken its toll on my sanity. But if possible does anybody have a diagram as to how the plates fit on a 2004 r1, keeping in mind that there are 9 fiber plates and a wire retainer, and 2 thin wire spring like washers also. Thanks

Make sure you prewet the friction plates b4 installation. Stack up is steel plate to friction plate. The pressure plate has an index mark that lines up with a corresponding mark on the clutch boss, if and you didn't install it correctly you might not get the correct seat pressure. The parts fiche shows the clutch pack reversed!!! You never want two steel plates together.
