Ok, I own a 2005 R1 with a racing slip on and when the bike was stock it was about a dead even run with my buddy's 04 ZX10. But just with this slip on I pull him easy everytime now. There's a guy my buddy knows who has a 86 Vmax with exhuast and jets, and he keeps runnin his mouth about how he can beat me. I know there is no way in hell he can pull this off but I was just wondering what that year has for horse and what it runs about in the quarter mile. I'm guessin that it has about 140hp at the engine and runs somewhere around a 11.1 Q/M.

not so fast my friend..

The Vmax.. all Vmax are pretty well setup for 1/4 mile runs..

Where is twisting ur R1 hard in 1st and 2nd will lead to eventual wheelies.. twisting in the same gears on the Vmax is just pure unadulterd acceleration..

Depending on the rider.. specificially how well you can launch your R1.. that Vmax just might take ur lunch..

And i'm not sure about that 11.1 either.. I would say that Vmax is good for a low to mid 10 sec run

You won't touch the VMax off the line, but once you're into the tripple digits will catch up quick.

Add any kind of a turn and you win.

86's are faster than the curent V-Max, I would say you are in for a hell of a race in the quarter, better strap that front end down if you want to have a chance.

I am a former R1 and a current Vmax owner. :fact

The 85-86 Vmax were the true beasts out of the Factory before they de-tuned them but simple mods can eliminate that factor.

It can be done but as Kwcomp stated above.........you better strap that front end down, sharpen your launch skilz and pack a lunch cause the Vmax is a beast in the quarter mile. :fact

I am ok at launching and excellent at riding. I have perfected getting the most power out of first without bringing the front up. So you would say if I strap it down that will eliminate almost all of the front end comin up in first and then there should be no contest even if he pulls 2 or 3 bikes at the start b/c 180+ engine horse and 550lbs(with rider) vs 145 engine horse and 770lbs(with rider) should physically be unable to lose. Correct?

You cant compare Horse Power numbers with a v-4, The extra weight he has on you is nothing compared to the extra torque he is making. Run em and post up the results!!!

Your looking at 120horse on a 1985 vmax and 77lbs of torque at 7000 rpm. Unless they got drastic increases in 86 my R1 is putting out almost 80lbs of torque at 10000rpm. So how is the vmax's torque gonna blow me away. Granted that it hits its max torque quicker but it also probably goes through at least 2 gears getting to 100 and I will be shifting out of first at 103mph. My bike is probably capable of a 9.9 quarter mile right now and strapped down could probably pull off a 9.7. I just can't see how this Vmax is gonna win or almost win.

Hmm..........This sounds just like a guy up at Quaker Steak and Lube in Milford. A bunch of us were there and within' just a couple minutes this guy aproaches us and starts running his mouth. He wanted to run his old VMax with our R1's. Well, I'm not stupid and he was drunk so............

It's not how much tq your putting down, it's where in the powerband is it that is going to show in the 1/4 mile.

Unless your damn good at launches, I would put my money on the V-max, but I'd like to see you prove us wrong.....

You'd better bring your A game when you race that vmax. I get to ride a vmax here and there and I'm always impressed. I know my bike will destroy it on the highway, but out of the hole your screwed. All you have to do to launch that vmax is rev it up, dump the clutch and hang on. The r1 is more tricky than that because you have to worry about that front coming up, and not bogging it.

:iamwithst

go race him and see what happens, be careful trash talking tho unless you know you can run mid 10's or lower everytime haha cos you dont want to run your mouth and lose to him :thumbup

God I just love these Testosterone filled pissing matches!! :lol :lol

The bottom line is the Max is what it was built to be, a beast cruiser in the 1/4 mile and the R1 is just a damn monster in the liter bike sportbikes field. :fact

The world is full of I and/or my bike is faster then you people. They will always be there. I just choose to smile, nod my head yes :yesnod you are and laugh inside as I walk away. :lol :lol

Lets just respect each bike for what it is and ride our rides and have fun. :thumbup

Do I have to worry about any negative effects on the front end as far as damaging the shocks or something from strapping it down??? Just bought straps and strapped the front end down 2 inches. I get ZERO lift with full throttle in first and second. This is the first time I have ever strapped it down. My buddie with the zx10 has a lowering kit, and he had it lowered when I first got my bike and evertime we raced when his was lowered he would stomp me by like 6-7 bike lengths. When he raised it up normal we were dead even untill I got my racing slip on. If my strappin the front down gives me the same effect that his lowering kit did then I just picked up about 2-3 tenths in the quarter mile. With a pro rider that bike would be capable of a 9.5-9.7 quarter mile time now. Im gonna race my buddie on his ZX10 tonight and see how much further I pull him from a stop b/c it was about 3 bike lengths before. The race between myself and the VMAX should happen this friday night. Results should be up no later than sunday.

I have an 85 vmax, as well as an 05 R1. The Vmax will win every time in the hands of a real rider. :fact

In 86 or 87, an two guys named Jay Gleason (rider) and Sandy Kosman took a box stock VMAX, piped it (using a kerker), jetted it, slapped on drag slicks, installed a wheelie bar, and ran a PUBLISHED 9.69 1/4 mile. Stock swingarm and all. Google it.

Yah, well he doesnt have drag slicks and he doesnt have a wheelie bar. With just jetting and exhaust he will never run better than a 10.5, and thats the best. Considering the R1 runs a 10.07 at worst and in sum reviews a 9.8 bone stock I think I am giving this VMAX to much credit. He might get me up to about 60mph but its all over after that b/c I'll be at about 9000RPM, right were I will hit my max torque and the race is over.

Piped and jetted, I run 10.10-10.15's at rockingham all day long on the old VMAX.
