What are the biggest differences between the 2005 and 2008 R1? Kind of hard to accumulate all the differences via the search, and was hoping someone would be able to ramble them off easily.

IM wondering the same thing, in my opinion the 05 is the better overall bike...i do know the 05 is lighter by 25-30lbs and his a slightly bigger fuel tank...and the 08 has bigger brakes i think...then ofcourse the cosmetic differences

I've never owned an 05R1 but I have ridden one and I think the 08R1 is definitely bettar/faster. I thought I was going to be dissappointed with the 08 because everyone said that the newer R1's have no bottom end. Well all I can say is that this thing screams all the way from the bottom to the top. I thought I would miss the low end torque of my 01R1 but this 08 is just as strong if not stronger down low. I love this bike!!!:rock

Thread is worthless without pics, but i would say if the bike is clean, its a good price. Got my 06 when it was 6 months old with 1200 miles on it for $9600.

To me there is not much of a difference between the '05 and '08. I'd hold out until next year and get the all new '09 R1. I have a feeling it's going to be the best R1 ever.

They are both great bikes that can't be used anywhere close to their capabilities on the street. If you are a budget minded person a good deal on a '05 in great shape is probably to much to pass by. If you need to have the latest greatest gizmo to look cool in front of your friends then by all means get the '08. You can't go wrong with either.

difference

I have a buddy who has both bikes you are referrring, we did a track day @ infineon and this is my jest of the 2. Power wise they feel the same, brakes hands down go to the 08. Also the 08 handles more like a 600. Absoulute blast to ride both. I have a 01 and he told me before I rode the newer bikes that I would be throwing rocks @ my bike. He was right.:thumbup

I'm also deciding between getting an '05 or an '08. I figured it out to be a $4000 difference between the two. I just need to decide if having the newest technology and 0 miles is worth $4k. Does anyone here know if there's a big difference in insurance rates for a brand new vs an 05? Also, is 12,000 miles a lot for these bikes? How long do they typically last?

i have a friend that has an 08 raven i dont think its that much different from my 05. i can take him everytime but of course his is completely stock. i think if he did the same mods that i have there would be a noticeable difference in the bikes.

I would go the bike with higher miles than the new bike. its always nice to have a new bike to rave about but its smarter money to spend it on an older bike. I just sold my K7 GSXR 750 (purchased new from the dealer) and bought a used 06 R1 with 7000KMS on it.
I will never buy a new bike again after what i went through with the dealer in charges for the first service and the shitful service i got from them and the money i lost in resale of the bike. Second hand for the win, so long as its got log books or a service history then you shouldnt have any issues if you regularly maintain it and look after it. And if you have to get a loan to buy the 08 that should be enough to tell you not to buy it, will cost you alot more in the long run.

YCCT, YCCI, slipper clutch, 10mm? smaller rotors, 6 piston callipers instead of 4, a few more hp, 2 cats instead of 1, and 16 valves instead of 20 .. hmm, i think those are the changes. for the track, i would go with the 08, for use on street, i'd save the money and go with an 04-06..

(Didn't mean to take over the thread but I happned to be in the same boat).

Thanks everyone, I appreciate the input. I think I'm leaning towards getting the used '05 as it saves me from taking out a huge loan. I'll keep everyone posted when I get a new bike.
