My 99 R1 was serviced on Monday - I rode it twice (less than 3 km each trip) the on Friday I stopped, put it in neutral, at idle, when there was a loud tap/banging sound. I turned it off straight away and called Yamaha who serviced it on Monday. Mechanic came who sat on it, put it in gear and rolled it forward where there was a tap tap tap sound - chain slipping over teeth.
At workshop - tank off, engine opened and mechanic tells me the Cam Chain Tensioner has ruptured. It appears to be wound all the way in and there is play in it. Now there's 3 bent valves, no piston damage though and a quote of $900 to rectify the problem.
Has anyone ever heard of this happening ever..???
