Anyone else sick of undertail exhausts?

Nothing personal to the 04/05 guys:hellobye but I hope the undertail exhaust fad dies out soon. The 02/03 r1's and the zx10 got the nail right on the head. Them hi level exhausts gives me the horn every time I walk up to my bike.:rock

The duc's and mv's looked cool and still are but I wish everyone else would give it a break. Heres to the 06 r1 getting its fat ass exhaust back sticking out the right hand side:beer

it's not true about the weight distribution. it actually raises the center of gravity. undertail exhausts are purely cosmetic, and generally lose some power over the side exhausts. it mate sense on the ducs because of the single sided swing arms. the undertail exhaust on that bike, along with the single sided swing arm allowed for quick wheel changes.

Sport Rider magazine had an editorial from Kent about this very subject. He mentioned many drawbacks and few good points. The only pro, imo, is the "no exhaust damage when dropped" point. I personally think the side exhausts look better, except for the Duc 916 996 998 748 family. But man, I lost count of how many cans I've gotten for my R1s over the years from stupid drops.

I think the biggest problem with that type of exhaust is the bends the pipe has to make. That has to affect back pressure.

The advantage is looks and ground clearance.

Suzuki did not go with the underseat exhaust and I think they have the HP edge again. That is 1 hideous looking canister.

Guess it depends on what your prioroities are.

I don't think our undertails have to make too many extra bends. Out of the header, it makes a 80 degree upward bend, then a 35 degree downward bend. Whereas the side exhaust would make 40 degree outward/slightly upward bend, and then a 40 degree inward/upward bend. Seems pretty similar to me.

Suzuki does have the hp advantage, but I think it is from the motor, not the exhaust. They went with a longer stroke than the R1, but almost have the same redline. You do the math for power.

These companies are in the business to make money. Companies like Suzuki and Kaw could not make the 10R and the GSXR1000 with an undertail economically. Its a no brainer the undertail sells bikes...the two would have had to redesign the rear swing arm and take into account a number of other related changes required...they simply could not do it and still make the targeted profit on the bike.

To people that dont have it...yes its easy to say...it looks bad, or it takes away performance, im all about function, form sucks, etc, etc...

Why put more ground clearance as a + for the undertail. So you have more of something you don't need. I personaly don't like the side can or the under tail any better than the other. I do however like the MCN type better than both. No pig-n-blanket look, no extra heat on your ass, no loss of trunk space adn no ugly, non-matching can hanging on the side of the bike.

Yes, my bike has an undertail exhaust, but I don't care what it looks like. If i cared about looks I never would have bought a V-Strom.

People actually do bottom out their side cans on the track. Ive seen a guy nearly high side himself and the bike after his can bottomed out a few bikes ahead of me.

As for the undertail causing heat...if youve ever actually ridden an 04+ R1, you will know the cans make very little affecting heat than the frame/engine itself. I dont notice the undertail exhaust heat at all. Neather do girls on the back wearing just shorts.

Well, that cannot be so bad. I recall having seen exhaust tubes on a race bike (I think it was a Honda MotoGP bike) bent to a circle (about 8" diameter!) to obtain sufficient exhaust length!
In fact some bends even may help to get rid of resonance problems.
The bends seen in the undertail exhaust are anything but sharp, so surelly no problem there!

I personally like the undertail and for me the 04/05 R1 does have the nicest exhaust so far.. But that's personal taste.
I didn't notice heat problems caused by the exhaust, nor did I notice exhaust fumes.
It is true that the undertail exhaust does have a potential disadvantage in weight distribution however, but who here will even be capable to notice the difference ? ;)
