are these more effective than the dark smoke? i mean taking care of unwanted glare while still providing good vision...

or is the extra cost just for the reflective material and the cool looks?

i want the mirror one...
Nothing different for me except appearance.

I will never buy another coated shield from Arai again!!!! I bought the iridium before, had it for 4 months...cleaned it with nothing but water and a soft cloth and the shit started rubbing off!!!!! Damn thing cost me 80 bucks!!!! **** that...I bought a smoke one instead for 40 bucks and it is cleanable with whatever you want, and last a long long time.

I have both the dark smoke and the iridium. The coating is starting to come off the iridium. You can only tell from the inside. The smoke is better for really bright days. The iridium slightly changes the color of things around dusk. I will stick with my smoke and clear.

Shit I am gonna buy one. Right now I have the tinted and clear and don't like either. Have been waitin' for an iridium to come out. Just be easy on it when you clean it and if the thing last me 3 months than it's worth it.

the new ones aren't suppose to be as problematic as the old ones. they dropped that manufacturer because people were reporting problems of the irdium rubbing off and the mirror lenses flaking.
it took them forever to chose a new manufacturer, and it'll cost you a ton, but they're suppose to be solid.

Indeed.

If the original poster did a search, that person would have found this information already.

The new Arai iridium shields came out 1st quarter of this year. I spotted one at Cycle Gear the first week of March.

New manufacturer and a supposed better quality. However, it'd probably be best to ask someone who has bought the new set of shields.

I got one in December... must have been the old batch.

It was completely pockmarked after one day at Streets of Willow, at a trackday with high winds and blowing sand.

From now on, I will only buy the dark smoke. They're far more durable.

Are you planning on any more SOW (or even WSIR big track) track days? Check out www.mtctrackday.com Would love to see you at one of our track days.

I am using an Arai Iridium visor that is Japanese spec (imported) and it's slightly better than the previous shield but still, not that great.

It specks, scratches and flecks was too easy. Not as good as the Shoei shields. But them the breaks...

i have one of the old and new lenses both have been flawless for me! my old iridium blue lense is 3 yrs. old and still perfect. the new is mirror finish it's 4 months old and no problem there either.. i use s100 spray wax to clean both lenses and it seems to be working great for me... i did notice that the newer lenses seem to be a bit darker than the previous model lense.. so i tend to use my old iridium blue lense at night. if you look at the two lenses sitting next to each other you can see the diffrence in design.

It's hard to get too excited about driving 450 miles to WSIR when Thunderhill is 45 minutes from my house, but I will be at WSIR on 9/15, 10/13 and 11/10, and Streets on 9/22.

ahhh, that's what I want!

Can I ask what model Arai that is?? I've got a new helmet on my wishlist and your model/colors is PERFECT!!

I live in Cally, so you wouldn't have to worry about two riders wearing the same helmet in the same town. ;)

It's the same helmet I have, Arai RX-7RR4 Haga Replica II. The second generation iridium shield is better than before but it will get damaged. But then again, I put on 20,000km a year and this is my second season with it. Just to put it in to perspective, I buy a new shield every three or four months.

No matter how much care you use cleaning it, it will pit and scratch, period (unless you ride under 50MPH where there are no bugs and stones).

It is a Kenny Roberts repleca model 2002 RX7xx4,i bought this one in Japan with the shield during mine visit in Tokyo september last year, the price from this helmet was 425€ and in Holland the same helmet cost 825€,sure the inner shape is different, but i can live with that.(no pain in mine head after driving 2 hours)
I think that you can bough this helmet also in the US,fom the shield im not sure, that is the same as the old shields Arai sell last 2 years, the new shields are produce and coated by Arai so they sould be better,Arai don't sell rubbish.
