Hi guys, I just bought a new 05 raven and have experinced tank slap about three times racing my buddys. Is this normal? It sucks. Will an aftermarket owens definitley help this problem. Need to get rid of tank slap or bike! It's not worth crashing.

Odd that your stock damper isnt taking care of that.. do you mean a real tank slapper, or just a little bobble?

maybe your stock damper is defective or mounts are loose?

I replaced my stock with an aftermarket which is nice but an alternative is to put a little heavier oil in the stocker (as many here have done w/ great success).

I'm guessing headshake if it is happening a lot. To go through 3 tank slappers without wrecking would be very impressive. Adjust your suspension, it will greatly help. I have lots of headshake dialed out by altering my suspension, I also go to great lengths to keep my front wheel on the ground.

Mine threatens to tank slap all the time when I ride agressively.. But it's just a quick jerk and then the damper quiets it down. It was unnerving at first, but you get used to it. I'm thinking of replacing it with an aftermarket one when funds become available.

How much do you weigh? Adjusting the suspension to your weight will help out alot. Your going to get a front end wobble(small oscillations side to side) from the bike regardless. Even if you had Ohlins suspension and the kitchen sink. A true tank slapper is from steering lock to lock and you had three of those?

i would trade it in for a gixxer 1000! they are so fast that the front wheel will never be on the ground so it will never get a chance to happen:bs ok im a suzuki guy that rides with him iv seen 2 of them and thought he was going down for sure. he rides the piss out of his bike so hopefully you guys can come up with a fix. he might weigh a buck 80 if hes lucky. little guy+big bike = going fast.:bow

I've tweaked the suspension lowered the bike a little under an inch and switched to an Ohlins damper, I still get some headshake under very hard accelleration but nowhere near the amount I got outta it stock. Oh and I only weigh about a 135.

I am curious, I too have the 05 black and weigh 170. I have had the front end off the ground racing at around 100 and no such problems. I have the stock dampner. I have had the bike damn near peged out n a race too. We ride near south 275 where 75 meets up. Explain the scenarios man

:2bitchsla That was a stupid comment.
:iamwithst at what point is that supposed to be helpful?

Also have you ridden anyone elses 04/05 R1? It is my understanding that the blue and red are slower than the black so look for a black one:sneaky . JK in all seriousness a good way to figure it out would be process of elimination. Try someone elses bike or have them ride yours. Not that I want to see anyone get caught in a slapper but it is just a thought:dunno

If TurboTim would come back and give us some more information, we could probably help him out better.
I agree, but by the looks of it he posted at 10pm or so last night. Maybe we will have more to deal with tomorrow.

Ok guys, Sorry. I guess it's not tank slap, it's head shake and it is really bad. First of all I weigh 165 pds. what is the best way to set up my suspension? I did order up the owens stock location dampner today. Should I lower the front of the bike about an inch or what. And if so can I leave the back the same. I want to go FAST without the shake.
I love whooping Busas.
And for the guy that rides on 275 and I-75 hit me up sometime thats where we race. I can give you my number to ride sometime.
Thanks for everyones help.

Is your suspension still at stock settings? What are the preload setting currently?

If you haven't changed it yet, set your rear preload to the 7th setting. Set your front preload to the 5th line (4 entire lines showing, and the 5th line being just even with the triple clamp). See how that does, if it isn't enough, I can get the rest of my suspension settings for you.

Also try putting more weight on the tank when you are at WOT. I weigh 175, and once I get into 2nd gear I have minimal head shake (first gear is a different story).

Thanks for those settings, I will right them down and give them a try. I noticed that I have the same setup on my bike as you do. Did removing the secondary throttle blades make a difference? I really wanted to do that. And where can i get a map like yours for the programmer? Thanks From Turbo Tim....
