I just traded my cbr 929 for an 00R1, its got 29k miles but it seems to run well. I did notice that if i start the bike in neutral and down shift to 1st it will clunk alot harder than any of my other bikes ever did. i know some clunk is normal but this one clunks a bit too much for my liking. so i decided to leave it in 1st and just start it in gear. this morning when i did that even with the clutch pulled all the way in it lurched front a bit when i cranked it. is that normal? i wouldnt think so. the freeplay on the clutch handle is adjusted properly and i have a defined release point so i dunno?

ya ive got about an 1/8th in of play on the lever, thats about where i kept all my bikes at. I was looking on ebay and most oem clutch kits are about 100$ for the springs and fibers. the kits with the steels are about 140$ , the clutch still grabs tight though so i dunno if its the problem but it shouldnt lurch like that

My bike moves forward a little, but I wouldn't say its so bad as to be able to call it lurching. Its more of a hello, I'm just going to move forward a little, if that's alright.

My first guestimation is the clutch. Because that's the function of the clutch, to disengage/engage the transmission to allow for smooth shifting

ya if i put it in 1st from neutral it wont go forward just thump. but if i start it in gear it will try to move a bit forward for a sec, ill try it again tomorro morn and see. i keep my idle set at like 1400 or so , this could be why it thumps hard from n to 1st but shouldnt affect the startup in 1st.

ya i was wondering that myself. possibly from sitting over night because i dont think it will lurch if ive been riding a while. ill have to test it ive only had it a day so far.. already had to delete the regulator plastic plug too .. luckily i keep a voltage gauge on all my bikes , its reading 13.9 v now around 3-5krpms... Do you think starting it with the plates a little dry is gonna hurt anything? should i maybe just start it in neutral as usual and when its warm only start it in gear?

Try changing the oil. If that don't work, remove the clutch cover and inspect the plates and fibers. If it continues to clunk, try this: Start bike, give a slight blip of the throttle, wait 4-5 seconds, then shift into 1st gear. They all clunk, but this seems to work for me. 9 out of 10 times, I can shift into 1st gear like butter. I would think a heavy clunk cannot be good for the dog rings.

If you start it in gear, put your foot on one of the brakes. It should only lurch forward when the oil is cold.
