The race version probably has a slightly different filter media, allowing more airflow (and more dirt) through it. I have a BMC street filter on my 1000RR.

Yea the more dirt part is the concert. But may many people use them, so makes me want to use one too for better breathing engine :cool008:

 

My guess would be the thickness of the filter itself. The GYTR filter I have is a lot thinner overall than the stock filter.

I hate how the foam deteriorates from around the BMC filter. I sold mine and bought a K&N street filter.

Might even switch back to stock since that's what AMA uses. :corn

What do you mean foam deteriorates, which place on filter? Just trying to understand where this is, and if it opens up major holes.

I would go for 'standard' (street?) BMC. My only issue with them so far was (on another bike) you really need to watch them and oil often, else all gunk / dust or micro shit gets through. I opened one airbox after a year not checking and.. that was the most mess i ever seen in the air box, and totally dry BMC filter.

So you saying, AMA just uses the stock oiled paper filters?

 

This is probably dumb question: but are original yamaha filters cleanable?

I'm going to install one of those aftermarket ones, but, I want to keep original , for case on some tracks here, they are paranoid
about noise level. And I was told, they may even force to insert back stock filter, since apparently, the aftermarket add to
noise.

Here are pics of my current OEM one... May be still usable in case forced ?

 

I use silicone to make sure the rubber around the race bmc filter does not allow any gaps for air to sneak through. My dyno tuner told me to buy the race, from his experience he gets better dyno results so thsts what I went with. I was worried about the filtration also so when I first got it, I inspected the throttle bodies and filtered side of the air box to see if dirt was getting through. The inspection never showed signs that dirt was getting through so I eventually stopped worrying about it.

What about using K&N sealing grease? They make it specially for air boxes, I did use on once on another bike, but sold it before I could say anything about result .
I still have left, I think I will use it around the filter when installing it
