Yesterday, I had to head from North Cheshire to the West Midlands (south of Birmingham) for an important meeting about KillSpills. In short, we have secured the necessary £21,100 funding required to deliver this years rally.
As I walked to the my garage, I knew it was cold, the pond was frozen and the grass was rock solid. Inside the garage it was minus 1 degree Celsius! I wheeled Vicky out and left her at the bottom of the drive whilst I went back inside to get my lid and gloves on.
When I started her up, I flicked the temperature gauge to air temperature and she registered minus 1. Now I know that Vicky’s air temperature gauge is always 4 degrees out from the actual temperature, so that made it minus 5!
We started our journey and headed for the M6. As we went past an office block that we pass every morning, the temperature gauge displayed on the side of the office registered minus 5… so as usual, Vicky was 4 degrees out.
As we headed into deepest Cheshire and crossed the farm land the temperature dropped to minus 6, and it stayed like that between minus 5 and minus 6 virtually all the way to Birmingham. As we approached the black country, the temperature increased to minus 4 and then minus three, and it remained at that temperature for the last 25 miles of my journey. All in all 100 miles, of which 75 were at -5 to -6. This was a cold ride, and it was the first time ever that my feet have felt cold whilst riding. Other than my feet, it was just my hands that were cold. This necessitated a couple of stops at motorway services to warm them up. Still the R1 was better than the car.
I had an excellent meeting, secured necessary funding for my road safety and the ride home was almost spring like in comparison, dark visor and summer gloves and a temperature of plus 6.
On the way home, I took a slight detour and headed for a Yamaha dealer, I wanted another look at the 07 R1, anyway, he is selling them for £8,995 (us$ 17,200) and he offered me between £3,300 (US$ 6,300) and £3,500 (US$ 6,700) for Vicky, a 2004 R1 with 50,000 miles on her. Or he said, with no part exchange, the price would be £8,500 (US$ 16,200). Bargain or what!
Will put up a separate post later re the rally.
