An FZ1 member built something similar with the risers and fairing off a Gen1 on a 50th and I loved it. But after looking at the streetfighter R1, it got me thinking about the FZ1 headlight rather than the V-Rod.

I like it even more than I thought I would My goal is to get an R1 donor this winter and have it ready by Spring. I love my FZ, but even with all the mods and work, it's no R1.

I never understood stubbing the front but not the back. Always looks unproportioned.

 

I agree to some point. On the R1 there isn't much to take off. On the FZ, it was a matter of time and budget. My entire bike has cost me less than $2200 (purchase and mods). I have seen a few rears that look good, but that is a lot more time and effort that I was willing to invest.

I will likely do something with the R1 rear, but I need to keep a passenger seat. What's the point of a hot bike if there isn't room for a chick on the back?

Cost is a bitch.

06-07 FZ1 = $6500-$7500 used
04-06 R1 = $5000-$6000 used

Right off the bat, the R1 is $1500 in the black. Add the euro kit, bars, risers, hoses, cables and you are still in the black. Sell the removed stock R1 parts and you are almost back to purchase price.

Now lets talk performance. R1 has a better stock rear shock, better stock fork valving, more hp, higher rev limit, radial brakes, better wheels, better geometry, it's lighter...

So you COULD take a Gen2 FZ, spend about $3000 in upgrades and make it on par with the R1. Or you can buy a lot of beer.

I like beer.

And so it begins. Monday night I purchased this '04 R1 with Leo Vince exhaust, USB Power Commander, and 9200 miles.

I have a ton of parts on order and a ton more on the way. Over the next 2 months, it will go through a drastic set of changes.

First up, color change.

The only problem with those lights is they suck as lights. I had one on my old FZ for about 20 minutes and a pen light provided better visibility. Even the 4" Dominators I had sucked at night.

This bike isn't so much a "streetfighter" as is is a naked sport bike (think Speed Triple, Super Duke, Tuono). It will essentially be the same ergonomics as an FZ1N, only with better geometry, few pounds lighter, and +40hp.

FZ1 sale +$2000
R1 purchase -$5000
LSL Superbike kit -$420
50th tank and tail -$200
FZ1N Headlight -$750
CRG Levers and mirrors -$200
Custom one-off rearsets -$520

Initial sub total $5090.

 

Any out the box, unconventional or low $ ideas on how to achieve that extra 40bhp?

 

For me is wasn't cheap:

Step 1 = sell FZ1
Step 2 = buy R1

The Gen2 FZ is about 140hp vs. the R1 at 180hp.

 

Got my bars yesterday. Best $420 I ever spent! Longer steel braided brake lines, longer clutch cable, top tree, risers, and bars. I need to drill the bars for the controls, but I should have them installed today.

The top tree is sweet. There is also a ring for the ignition (not pictured). This setup was just what my bike needed.

I am playing with the back, but I am keeping the seat for now (even though I lack pegs). I am taking 5 inches out of the width and 4 inches (or more) out of the length. I am narrowing the seat by a few inches, too.

 

What make and model are the bars and T tree?

option for just a thought. buy a rear off someone for cheap and fab a stubby tail for when you dont have a girl to drag your bike down.....

fab a system to make them interchangeable and bam. easy as 123

I'd shorten up the Leo's a few inches too....

 

Looks like it's going to be pretty clean. What are you doing with the radiator overflow tank? What gauge pod are you going to use? Where did you order the Headlight assembly from?

I'm looking forward to the finished product. I agree that the mufflers could use a shortening.

 

I'm using the stock gauges. The FZ1N headlight has a gauge mount built in, I just have to make a mount plate for it (I think). I ordered the headlight from Burlington Yamaha, they are the only supplier I know of that carries the FZ1N conversion kit in the US.

There is a lot of cleanup to do yet with all the wires and whatnots. Once I have the headlight and gauge setup finished, I have about 2 months to button it up before the rain stops.

I'll have to check out the yelow carbon. I was just gong to use standard carbon in place of the black parts in the concept draft.
