Crashed R6 = my new track bike?

Hey guys,

My friend owns a wrecker service and came across this crashed R6 that I could pick up at a good price. Supposedly it has a clean title. I have not seen the bike in person, but I plan to later this week.

Can you tell by the pictures what year it is? I plan to look at the frame and the VIN when I look at it, but maybe someone can tell by the pictures.

Is there anything specifically I should look for as far as the damage goes? I realize the obvious things like the frame, forks, wheels, engine cases, etc. Cosmetic damage is not that big of a deal for me either (notice the dent in the tank).

Ideally I would like to make this a track bike, but if the damage can be repaired and I can get it cheap enough, I might put it back on the street.

Thanks for the help.

Looks like an '03. It looks like it was stolen, so I would be check the motor. It looks like it took a hard hit, so check the frame too. The subframe looks bent and there doesn't look like any good plastic left to sell.

Hell Ive crashed my 03 R6 race bike far worse than that. It looks pretty good. If U get it cheep it would be a good track bike.
Sub frames are cheep and can be replaced. (Body work makes no matter if U r going to make it a track bike anyway.

The frame, motor, forks, wheels, Swing arm, are whats important. Cause of their cost mostly. Check for cracks in any of them, or bends. Check for any fluid residue on any part of the bike. And as a most important rule, NEVER buy any bike U havent started and ran for a while first. If they wont let U start and run it a while at least.... Walk away.....just walk away. Take a rear stand and get the wheel up and throttle it a bit and go through the gears as well. Noone wants a bike with detroyed shift forks, and a bad tranny. (Im assuming U cant ride it so thats your only option.)

Good luck.

Oh yeah andf the tank can be repaired as well....... So dont worry about that gash to much.

On the note of price. Depending on what you find wrong with it. Assume it will cost U a minimum of 1-2K to get that bike repaired and ready to ride. Not including any upgrades you might add. Take that into account when U get the price. If the amount with what you have to put in it is as much as getting one that ISNT wrecked...save your money and go get a used bike thats mint.....

that's an 03. 04-05's have inverted forks and radial mount brakes.

looks like the bike was jacked. notice the lack of a key switch? I'd say with some love it would make a helluva track bike!

Thanks much for the advice guys!

Yeah the bike was stolen and the thief crashed it running from the police, supossedly in a field or something. I hope the F-er went to jail.

The price I was quoted was below $1k for the bike as it sits with a "clean" title. I just gotta make sure I don't have to put $3-4k into it or it won't be worth it. Unless I can part it out, but I would rather not go through that hassle.

BlueDevil- thanks, I will most definitely want to see/hear it run and ride it around, if possible. I am hoping it's still hot-wired so I don't have to buy a key and ignition switch to make it run.

:iamwithst - It's a 03. I'd get it as long as the frame's good and the motor. Looks to be alright - if not just sell it for 1500 or so as a whole or sell parts - thats a good price for the bike if the major components are good.

For under a grand, buy it and I will double your purchase price to take it off your hands.

Good catch....thanks for the heads up! If it's an 04 for under a grand, just that much more of a deal.........

No worries just go to GDLcycles.com and get all the goodies U need at discount prices. Gotta love the crashers... haha

BTW anew frame is like 8-900 so even that can be replaced if U needed.....but the labor to swap it out to a new frame would be the killer.

1K....It would take a lot to talk me outta buying that bike. If the motor runs and frame is straight.... Take that thing....

Buddy of mine bought an 03 636 for 900 bucks. Put 2K in it and had a sweet race bike. Sold it later for more than he had in the whole thing.....

I also use Mrcycles for NEW parts. He beats damn near everyone.
I use GDL for used parts to save even more. No sense paying more if its a track/race bike if chances are your gonna crash it and need to a buy a new part anyway.... haha
Cant go wrong with either site.
