Custom Underseat exhaust project PART-2

Well, the first project didn't come out like I wanted to... The single can cut down to 9 inches was WAY TOO DAMN LOUD !!!

...and the 2" diameter pipe didn't allow enough backpressure and it made my R1 run funny even after I tried adjusting the PC3r mapping. I ended up leaning it out too much and it ran like shit.

So, I went back to the drawing board, and found an IXIL underseat slip-on system for sale that was brand-new in the box unused by its owner. Regular price on INDYSUPERBIKES.COM is $699, I got it for $500.

I never saw the threads on here about how badly missaligned the IXIL systems are, otherwise I might have reconsidered... BUT I decided to make this work.

The first thing I did was to mount the cans to their brackets top and bottom, then I removed the 2 TO 1 collector from my Akrapovic system ( YES, THIS SLIP-ON IS MATED TO AKRA HEADERS ). I put the IXIL midpipes into place took some measurements and angles, then went to a friend of mine that is good with welding and fabrication. Our solution was to weld an exhaust flange to the end of the Y pipe that was the same diameter as the entrance to the midpipe. The angle had to be adjusted several times so the flange would point straight at the midpipe and still have everything aligned properly. Once it was welded and the midpipe was installed I saw exactly what kind of CRAP IXIL puts together.

I had to fight with every bolt and pipe !!!! By the time I had everything in place and adjusted, I had two split knuckes and lost about 2 hours... of course that also includes a few beer and SWEARING breaks.

All in all it came out pretty good... it is still out of alignment by about a half inch or so, but I'm happy with it.

When I was putting the thing together and just getting more and more pissed by the second, I happend to be looking in my tool box and found 2 TERMIGNONI stickers... SO, I drilled out the rivets on the IXIL tags and put the TERMI stickers on !!!!!

HEY IXIL !!!! DON'T F**K WITH MAGNUS !!!!!!!!!!

:yesnod :lol :lol :lol

Here are the pics.... Let me know what you think.

Hey Magnus,

That looks fantastic!! I like it a lot. The single sided swingarm and the exhaust look very sweet. The only thing I don't really like are the black mids and lowers but that's just my opinion. Other than that, looks great!

The black lowers are stock, all I did was sell my white mids and buy black ones. I wanted to be different 'cause I have seen another black/white/red R1 at my local bike night.

Thanks for the compliment.

Looks great Mag, especially with the SSW & Marchesinis :thumbup

The only thing I might have done different, was cut down the length of the cans about 4-5", make it just a tad shorter than tail, exiting just below tail light :yesnod

I know bad timing on that comment, especially after all the time & busted knuckles :2bitchsla

PS: You know, after looking again at the pics (cans), not sure if you could cut them down very easily, are the end caps press fit, bolted, or welded? the link pipes don't look like there is sufficient length (from bends to cans) to shorten either :no

oh well just a thought :yesnod

The end caps are welded on. I thought about cutting them down a bit but when I saw that I said forget it.

Magnus,

Great looking bike! I have some questions though regarding the IXIL exhaust since I was thinking about getting it. If I have a bone stock R1, how hard would it be for me to put on? Is the reason why it was difficult because you were attaching it to aftermarket headers? I wanted to go with something different like either an undertail exahust or the MCM Mirage exhaust.

Your input is very much appreciated! Thanks!

Yes the most difficult thing was getting everything to line up properly because I did not have a starting point. The mid-pipe supplied with the IXIL system slips right onto the stock system... so you would have a starting point for the rest of the system and you would know immediately where everthing else went.

I basically had to hold the mid pipe in place with the "y" pipe from the Akra system removed and measure distances and angles.

I had heard from other people that IXIL makes poorly fitting pipes esp. this underseat system. I had to struggle with getting the canisters on the end of the midpipe and still have them line up with the mounting holes on the undertray and the "X" bracket that goes underneath the cans. It was a real pain, but I like the finished product.... ( mine still does not completely line up in the rear... the cans are too far to the left of center on the taillight by about a half inch or so )

Do a search for "IXIL" on this forum and read the other things that people have said about it.
