greets.
I bought my first R1 few days ago. used one. with no
riding manual. simply with nothing just the bill, lol.
Ok, now, since I got 0 experience on this kind of engine,
I wonder what the engine temparature should be.....
cuz I got the feeling, my cooling systems does not work properly.

I am riding in Spain, and even now in Oktober the sun is hot. If I am standing at a red light, engine already warm and at about 1.000 rpm, the damn temparature goes up and up....when riding in the town with slow traffic and lot of red light stops, today I had a temperature of 101 degrees Celsius ! I was scared to hell....so scared, I turned off the engine and put the bike under a shadow to cool off.

So my question >
where is the critical temperature for the engine?
what should the temparature bee for high performance....when is the engine to cold to do high rpms...etc....

please please...I am so scared seeing engine heating up to 100 degrees

!!!!!

i thnk you should make serious effort to find the manual, go to a dealer adn ask them if you could get a copy, buy one, or heck, just read it there, its short.

if there is a temperature problem, the R1 will have a light flash indication its too hot and needs to cool.

it should be a light right next to your temperature display, if it comes on, it means chill somewhere.

else if its not on, you dont have to worry about it.

I am in Miami,FL and my 00 R1 makes it up to 226 degrees farenheit in traffic but never overheats. i would not worry unless the temp light comes on.

I'm in SF, and its freezing here, and my R1 makes it up to 226 as well, its seems pretty normal. I believe around 250 is the overheating point, the manual spec'ed it out very clearly, but yeah, just watch the heat light and you'll be good, the R1 knows how to take care of itself overall.

go and search the forum, I believe that someone already posted links to the service, parts, and maintenance manuals on this forum.

You can download them; they are in pdf format.

I live in Singapore (where its always at least 32-34 degrees Celsius outside) and my 2001 goes up to 106-108 degrees Celsius when riding around the city and stopped at traffic lights. Like skyshot44 said, the fan comes on at 106 degrees Celsius. I've never had an overheating problem with mine...

thanks all.

I thought maybe my fan is not working. Also I was worries what if the heat light is broken, too :)
worries...worries.....I bought my R1 used in a spanish shop, and I dont trust spanish dealers :)

btw, any know how to calculate farenheit - celsius ?

again,
you guys made my heat worries go away, so I can
cruise thru the city now without worries.

Try this link

to calculate all kinds of stuff.http://w1.194.telia.com/~u19402407/yamahar1/Formler.htm
I found it somewhere in Martincs site. It should come in handy quite often.

I believe the tapping sound you are hearing when your engine gets over 220f originates from excessive piston to cylinder wall clearance brought on from thermal expansion. Notice how the noise goes away when it cools off.

If youre going to run your bike over 200f often it would be in your bikes best interest to install a manual fan switch. If youre not moving and youre running high temperatures the constant fan will keep your motor and everything else cooler under the fairings.

If you are sitting in stop and go traffic, your fan should come on at 220 degrees and it should keep the motor from getting hotter than about 230. It should shut off at about 210.

The normal range should be about 160-230 depending on air temp and riding conditions.

Coming from Saudi Arabia, I'm pretty sure that your bike shouldn't have any problems with the heat. My advice would be to 1) give it a routine check for the coolant system to check for faults 2) keep the bike turned on after you're done riding so the fan cools the engine down and 3) use low viscocity oil. You shouldn't have any problems at all.

Hiyah. I live in Singapore and the ambient temperature here nowadays is about 25-28 degrees.

My 02 R1 gets max 105 degrees celsius stucked in town traffic but lowers to about 78 in afternoon riding.

Night riding allows the temp to go as low as 72 degrees sometimes but that's normal ;)
