Hi guys,

Ive been reading up on suspension adjustment and it looks like the stock springs on 05 R1 are only good for 160-180lb rider.

I am 6.3 and 240lb and need some help on what upgrades I need to do to
properly set sag and get suspension dialed in for its best performance.

I am not doing any track as of now, so its all city/highway riding. Plus I will be taking a passenger sometime as well (110lb)

Please point me to the right direction as far as Brand, Model, spring rate, place online to purchase, best deal, etc ..so I can pick up the correct springs.

Bike: 2005 R1 with Pilot Powers 120/70 front and 190/50 rear

Here is what works for me (6' 4" and 250 - 04 R1)

Stock front springs .930 kg/mm
preload - 1 1/2 lines showing
30 mm sag

Rear shock from 07 R1 - ($60 on ebay)
07 shock has 9.4 kg/mm spring vs stock 04 rate at 8.6 kg/mm
even with the stiffer spring I have the preload at 9 = maxed just to get 35 mm sag.

The 07 shock also has improved valving and separate high and low speed compression adjusters.

I can't remember the comp/ rebound settings that I am using off the top of my head, but I can check the bike later if you would like.

Oh that would be cool.

I checked around on RaceTech.com and they recommend 1.00 front and 9.8 rear... thats 250 or so shipped. Plus the cost of install on front forks and stuff....

If I could do what you did,,, that would save me Tons of money =)

Please check the Rebound/Compression settings you have on your bike. I would like to try your settings.

Here are my settings:

Forks - Compression 9 clicks out from full stiff
Forks - Rebound 8 clicks out from full stiff

Shock - High speed compression 2 full turns out (does not click)
Shock - Low speed compression 8 clicks out

Again this is what is working for me....certainly not ideal, because the shock spring preload is set so high that the bike only sag is non-existent. This must be done to get the rider sag in the ballpark. If you have the money, everyone will recommend getting aftermarked straight rate springs and valving set for your weight and riding style. I will do this when my budget allows, but for now, my set-up works well for spirited street riding and intermediate level track day riding.

Let me know what you think if / when you try these settings.

NEED is taking it a bit far. The factory springs are progressive rate, because they are intended for a rider of a certain weight range (say 150 to 180 lbs) and if I remember correctly R1's do have a passenger seat and pegs! So a 150lb rider with a 100lb passenger NEEDS an aftermarked shock and 10.0 to 10.5 spring rate? The factory spring will acomodate such a rider combo. Yes, it will sag too much and use up more travel than you want, but it will work.

Again, I'm not saying these things won't help when the pace gets turned up.....but you do not need aftermarket parts to enjoy your bike.

:iamwithst A couple hundred here could save several hundreds down the road due to poor suspension exp if having a passanger! Lets face it he may not be that aggressive to need it but he can grow into it and would have to replace later on when he gets to that point. Its a great investment plus you will know in your head your on the right stuff.

Thank you guys for all the help.

I think at this time I will get 07 R1 shock with stock 9.4 spring. It will bring me very close to the proper sag for street use (recommended one is 9.5 by racetech).

I only do casual street/freeway riding. No racing yet.

And when I get to the point of getting to the point when I am ready for a track.... then I will upgrade springs. At that point I will already have slightly better 07 shock to work with.

Works for me! I'm having the same problem. I'm 6.2 235...So the 07 shock will fit my 04? I sure hope so, I just bid on one. Thanks for the input guys.:thumbup

Yes, the 07-08 shock is a bolt in. I have one installed on my 04. The only thing to be aware of is the rebound adjustment (clicker at the bottom of the shock), for the 07-08 bikes. It is adjusted from the right side on an 04 and the left side on the 07-08. I chose to rotate the shock shaft (and therefore lower mount / rebound adjuster) 180 degrees so that it is adjusted from the right just like my original 04 shock. Others have found that if you do not do this, you have to make a special tool to reach the clicker.

Also, the comp adjusters will be on the opposite side, but there is room to access them and there is no way to flip them anyways.

70BSACamaro, Great info! I just won an 07 shock from Ebay. So lemme get this strait, rotate the bottom mount 180 degrees before install right?...got it! Thanks!:hammer:

Just say'n, I have the '08 R1 shock on my ride and it is not a night and day difference, it is just simply a spring boost, and perhaps a little better dampening control.....not much. :drunk: But it is better.....just say'n

Hey guys,
I do need a spring upgrade. I am 250+ and my 2004 R1 has an extended swing arm (only 2-3 inches longer than stock) but since its lowered plus my weight I had to repair/replace headers a few times already. Is there a stiffer spring any one recommends.

In PR every two/three corners there is a hayabusa :yuk:and I heard a few of them that had the 300 tire kit speaking about an 800 lbs spring.
Does anyone knows about this.

I live in Puerto Rico and streets here are not that smooth so because of this plus my weight I need this mod.
