How Long and Far Can You Ride?

Hi Guys: I've been riding an FZ1 which I really like but I'm thinking of trading it for an '03 R1. However, the old body isn't as flexible as it once was, and there's a lot of talk in chat rooms and mags which would have one believe you can't ride a sport bike for more than 30 minutes before your arms or whatever give out. I hate the thought if I trade for an R1 I might think to myself after the first 20 minutes trading was a big mistake. I am curious what you guys think. Can you ride for three or four hours no problem? Is an R1 that uncomfortable?

Also, if I get an R1 and they have to lift me off the bike every time I ride is it possible to get bars a little higher without unweighting the front tire to the point it is dangerous?

I think the R1 is the absolute best bike made but have to wonder if I am too old and stiff for one. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated

Yes you can get afetermarket clip ons and adjustable pegs to make it more rider friendly. You can even have the seat modded. The stock bars vibrate a bit @ 5,000 RPMs but there are ways to null that out as well, such as, heavier bar ends. I can ride for a couple of tanks of gas (260-280) miles before I really must stop. But, I didn't buy mine to ride long distances. If I'm going far I'm driving or trailering the R-1. Just my preference.

what are you some kind of Woosy boy? :D I jest scarabsport I jest. My ass normally goes numb at about the 2 hour mark on the SP and then I gotta get off. On the old R1 I used to get about 2 1/2 hours in the saddle and then I was looking to get off. Take a long test ride and see what you think.

I usually stop about every 5 miles to rest for an hour or so....:bs

No really, I try to stop every time I fill up for about 10mins just to relax. That is if it is highway riding. On serious twisities I take longer breaks, cause I'm working harder.

I've done 1000 mile weekends on mine with no problem, just a little stiff.

I've done 600 miles (1000kms) in one day on the R1, and was alright after that, just a bit stiff. Would not have liked to do it again the next day, but could have if needed..

That trip was just all motorway cruising (100-120mph) with just stops for petrol.

I have a friend who is about 50 and rides just as far as the rest of us on his 1, and he does not move around the bike the way that many of us younger folks in the group do.

R1-forum member Zrider has a set of riser bars on his 1, and he does some distance riding. I am not gonna try to pin an age on him(I only met him once) but let's just say that he is probably a few years beyond his 30's.:D

My biggest problem is my ass starts to kill after about 40 mins.
I'm pulling the seat off it this winter and getting it redone with a little lip on the rear and more cushion.

Man I have to say that your bike looks sweet in the yellow!!!:rock

I originally posted the thread worried about my aching back but it now appears I should be more concerned with my skinny old worthless butt. Has anybody had any experience with aftermarket seats?
By the way you guys have all exercised admirable restraint in your replies. I've been waiting for someone to tell me to get a set of apehangers from a Hardley and one of those big wide seats from a Gold Wing! That would be a unique R1!
I do thank you for all your replies. The quality of your forum matches the quality of the R1.

I'm 25 and have done a few 500 mile days. I took a 5 day, 2,500 mile trip. First day was 10 hours, just under 700 miles. A little sore, but I'd do it again without thinking twice.
Guess thats why I got 9,400 miles on my 02, but I guess thats nothing compared to the guy on here who has like 25,000 or some shit already.

I've done over 8 hour days of twisties and freeways. Only time my butt hurts is on the freeway. ...but even that is remedied by standing for a few minutes at a time. my feet start to tingle sooner than my wrists due to the normal engine buzz. But yeah, I'd say the R1 is comfy.

There are corbin seats for the R1 but you may have to wait a while since they are made to order I think.

I have had lower back reconstructed and the R1 is not to bad, you can sit up almost straight for the long straight rides if needed. I've done 600 plus mile days and one night alittle over 500 miles with the wife on the back.

I've done NH to MD rides in an afternoon/evening. Stop to get gas and then get right back on.

There is definitely a little something something in my lower back that lets me know that I was just riding my R1 once I finish though. It's a little stiff.

the only problem I had for long trips like 4 or more hours was my ass and lower back but I went and got a corbin seat and I kick myself for not getting one sooner. My back doesn't get sore and my ass is nice and comfy. The only thing with the corbin seat for me is it moved me toward the back of the bike when I was used to sitting almost on the tank.

Im 41 years old and i noticed @ 2 years ago............

im not the same! I can do city for about 2 hours and same with highway before i need 15 minute rest. I can do this off/on all day but..........

Ive come home and called best friend to come over and put bike in garage! after 8 hours i can barely lift my legg over bike to get off! my last 10 hour ordeal I came home, crawled into house, called BF to put bike away for me, and passed out in middle of living room floor with full leathers on. Woke up almost 2 days later!

My promise this winter was to start working out and stretching more to get into shape for Deals Gap! I think in my old age and career i have let myslef go and do not look at the WHOLE aspect of riding?

long trips

Once did a trip to niagra falls the total time spent was about 15 hours (shit load of detours and bad directions) only stopping for gas and food my ass hurt and my legs were stiff but my back and arms were fine. Don’t get me wrong I was looking for that low fuel light to come on so I could get off and stretch but it was not that bad. Best you can do is find someone with one and take a good long 50-60 mile ride and see how ya feel cause if you are hurting after that you might want to rethink trading. I’ve read those fz’s are a blast to ride what makes you want to trade they look pretty cool to.

I did 1800 km over 18 hours last year, and a two day 2400 km trip this year. My traps got sore and I lost most of the strength in my right hand(for a week) on the trip last year, the two day trip this year was only some minor cramping in my traps. I found 1200 km a day were not a problem but that extra 600 km will kill you.

I find that the ergonomics of the '00 R1 suits me perfectly for 400+ miles, with stops only for fuel, just fine. But I am used to a foward lean crouched sportbike riding position, having ridden an '87 FZR 1000 for 16 years, and thousands of miles on road bikes including long distance touring, road racing/training, and one cross continental ride back in the summer of '81 averaging 100 mi/day over a period of 43 days riding. Makes multiple 400 mile rides on an R1 seem like a restful nap in comparison.

I've heard guys say that the '02 model is a tougher position on long rides than the 98-01. I have only been on my '00 and I find the ride great for a couple hundred kms all the way up to about 700-800km but after that it gets somewhat numb. My biggest ride was 1674kms and it took a bit out of me.
But there's always a way to fix yourself after a long ride.:beer

When I bought My R1 I was a bit worried about my wrists because I have to ride about 700 - 800 km's before I get to the Alpes wher I go to ride foor a couple of days or a week. However, that concern vanished when I got my R1, people who say it's not comfy should buy a Goldwing...

After a day I'm a bit stiff, but that goes away in about 10 minutes, next day no problems...

Enjoy your R1 man...it's really worth all the money.

Hey Scarabsport!
I just bought my R1 last August and I can't get enough. I am 53, so there! What I have noticed is the right hand gets numb sometimes but that is because I am stressin out a bit and got the death grip goin on, when I relax all is good with the right hand. A light helmet is a good thing, I am shopping around at this time, the neck gets a little stiff after a while but not that bad. I am thinking a lighter helmet will help with the stiff neck syndrom.
I am 5'7" and I find that if I keep my nuts glued to the tank I can ride for quite a while. I have done 200+ miles with one stop to take a break just to look at the bike, can't help it, and feel just fine.
I have noticed though that the faster you go the more weight comes off your shoulders.;)
The R1 is not a putter bike and to try to make it one would be a mistake. I find riding the R1 or any bike on straight highway type roads just bores the crap out of me. I got a sreet fighter type 1200S Sportser with Storz rearsets and drag bars for putting around.
I have got to say that the R1 is the finest motorcycle I have ever owned. To quote the evil Doctor in the movie "Hell Raiser II"
"and to think I hesitated" Buy it for what it is and you will never be sorry.:D

I don't think you will get the right idea from a short 50-60 mile test ride like some have suggested. When I first got my 1 I didn't think I was going to be able to ride it. It killed me just to ride it to work (10 miles). I thought I had messed up bad and was even thinking about trading it off, but the more I rode it the more I got used to it. I've done a 530 mile day and 1500 miles over three days and didn't have a problem.
