How many of you still have stock mufflers/baffle kit?

Ok with xmas around the corner money is a little tight around the house for the R1 fund. How many of you have the stock cans with baffle kit installed? The other thing is with a leo y pipe and baffle kit, do you really need a PCV with custom map? Maybe after xmas I'll be able to get the cash for the leo slipons, but the money for the baffle kit and the y pipe I have now. So What do yall think?

I think uncle Leo is gonna like you (alot)...

I'm puttin my $ into something more fun (and yes - I run the baffle kit... it's awesome!)

I'm running baffle kit too!

Bought an 04 with stock exhaust. Previous owner purchased baffle kit and 4-stroke "wadding." He did the install himself.

It was loud as hell! Sounded VERY raspy. Every downshift was accompanied by backfire's every 100rpm drop. I liked the way it sounded but I had "wadding" flying out of my exhaust daily and all my friends within a 1/2 mile radius knew when I left home.

Also, the baffles didn't seat correctly. The guy I got the bike from didn't do a very good riveting job.

After buying the bike I paid a shop to re-pack them.
FMF 4-Stroke Wadding: $15 (x2)
1hr labor: $70

I stuck around the shop and chatted with the owner while a mechanic was re-packing them for me. It took the guy about 3 hours. I was watching him the entire time, and I should have paid for about 2 hours of labor. Not sure what your local shop is gonna stick you for, but I STRONGLY suggest having someone else do it for you.

The sound is much louder and more defined than stock, but not as intense as other aftermarket pipes I've heard. You can force some gurggling sounds on a downshift if you like hearing it, but it's nothing crazy.

Reason I LOVE this mod........ 5-0 pulls up behind you and looks at your STOCK exhaust... No crazy Yoshi script. No carbon shit. Nothing Chromed.

....And you can keep it quiet up to 4500rpm if you have to.

Hope this helps!!

Thanks for the replys! Make me wonder if you really need the PCV with the setup of a baffle kit and y pipe? Im assuming that I do need the PCV with a map in order to lean it out a little.

I have had A&R baffles in my 04 R1, my 07 ZX10, and now the 09 R1. They have each fit perfectly (although the 09 R1 was a little tough to get aligned when putting back together, but that is because of the design of the stock mufflers, not because of the baffles) and are well worth the money. I have had more compliments on each of these three bikes sound than the two bikes I owned prior with aftermarket mufflers (one had Yosh, the other Two Bros).
I did add more packing to each muffler though. Gave it a deeper sound and was a bit louder as I wrapped them tight.

I've got stock pipes with the A&R baffle kit. The previous owner didn't do a very good job of fitting it, so I pulled it apart, put new 4 stroke packing in and re riveted it properly. They sound good now without the rasp that was there before.
I like the look of the stock cans with Carbon shields on them.
I also have a Micron decat Ypipe and a PC111 with a map from a friend with the same setup as I run now. I also have Graves stacks, A&R smog plates and a Krankvent.
The bike runs great:flex:
One day I will get a bargain on a pair of carbon Akros, but I'm fcuked if I'm paying full price for them:)

If you want a real kick in the pants mod for not much money, drop a tooth on the front sprocket. It will feel like your bike has been on a course of steroids:flex:
Best bang for buck mod I can think of:thumbup

Well for mine (09) before I had enough $$ for slip ons I took mine apart by drillng out the rivits with a large bit almost all the way then tapping them out with a a punch. Then you'll have to drill out the spot welds, but be careful not to take out to much material. Drill out just enough otherwise the end caps won't cover up the holes. Then what I did to pull the muffler apart was take a screw driver and carefully work it between the outside of the canister and the baffle. You can bend this area a bit cuz the cap covers it so don't go about it like it's brain surgery. Once you work it far enough you should be able to pry it out where you drilled the spot welds and just pull it out. It will prolly be in there pretty good but a decent tug will get it out. A&R suggests drillng a hole in the back of the can and driving it out but when I tried this it just put a hole thru the baffle. Anyway, when you get it apart you can remove the fiberglass and copper. Then take a long/large drill bit (I used a 3/4" reamer) and just go to town. Like I said it is the, almost, free way so it's not the 1st choice but it will def make it louder until you can afford new cans. You could cut the section of pipe in the baffle completely out if you wanted I suppose.

Basically just take it a apart, examine how the gasses flow inside it and think of how to make it louder..

Or you can just make your own baffles for less than what you could buy them for if you are inclned enough to do so

I changed over from stock to the baffled stock and found them to be a bit loud for me. I went back to stock after about a month. Hopefully in the spring I can find some after markets that have a deep tone but not too loud.

Well Thats the way Im going for now is the baffles, y pipe, and PCV. I'll post up some picks and vid as soon as I get them in.

I have a spare set of oem slip ons that I am putting them in. Just could justify $1k right now for a set of Akras. I am one of the few that likes the look of the stockers. Also thinking about powder coating them before reassembling to be a little different.

Did you shorten those? They look shorter than stock to me in that picture. I like the black exhaust and heat shields. What kind of paint did you use on them? That's a gorgeous bike.

i have a set of stock pipes with race baffles in on a 07 r1, i am finding them a little loud and thinking about putting my other stock pipes back on.
could someone please Recommend to me how to make them a little quieter, it just seems to be painfully loud around 3.5k - 4k rpm mark at mo!
Over here in the UK the kit we use says to wrap the race baffle in a single cover of the stock baffle padding then place the race baffle in the stock can with the single covering around it and pack the rest of the can out with a material which is just like wire wool! I really packed the cans tight! But it just seems like there still to loud.
Is there another sort of packing material the would town down the baffles or have i packed them a little wrong????
Thanks!

looks great! I just bought two systems, Baffled set already done and a set of gytr's, but I'm going to sell the both of them for a set of Leo Vince. If somebody will buy them. If not then I guess I'll try both out and see which one I like the most and run with that. I'm having a difficult time deciding which Y pipe to go with, either the Leo or Akrapovic? If I sell both systems then I'm going with the 3/4 leos then for sure. If stuck with the GYTR which Y pipe manufacture should I go with> Thoughts?
