HOW TO: 04-06 R1 Diassemble Stock Slipons

disclaimer:
There was not much interest in the modified stock 04 R1 slip-ons I offered here and they did not sale here and I will not be offering anymore here due to spidey's request that I not.
For those that want to disassemble,modify or refinish their stock cans this is for you.
baffle removal:
remove cans from bike
remove heat shields
drill out 6 rivets on the end of can with 3/16" bit and remove cap
center punch and drill 4 spot welds with 3/16" bit
drill each spot weld with 3/8" bit thru Ti cover
use drift punch to push baffle unit out
install wrapped 2"o.d. race baffle after cutting to length and angle
install cap with 6 rivets
refinishing Ti:
Glass beading does not do much to marked up Ti so if you need to remove bracket and/or scratches try al/oxide , sand or slag blasting. Blasted Ti is hard to keep clean so you may want powdercoat or paint it.

use drift punch, awl or screwdriver topush baffle towards end. awl wiggled in rivet holes will help break unit free.

cut baffle, wrap and install. baffle is approx. 16.5 " long and has angle cut to match cap

rivet cap back on. stock rivets are SS but Al. is fine

Rivets

Are the stock ones stainless steel or mild steel?

I just got the race baffle kit for my 2004 R1 from A and R Motorsport and it came with aluminium rivets. Are there any disadvantages to using aluminium rivets before I go ahead and mod my cans?

Said I broke forum rules by soliciting people interested in pipes. Like I said above I never sold anything from this forum. I shared what i made , I offered 1 pipe of each style they did'nt sale so all but the one I use to this day ended up on ebay. I am just a motorcycle fan and hobbiest not a company but it is his forum so I will abide by his rules and keep my buying and selling on ebay.. Ride safe, Les

I am offering all my remaining parts on ebay, no direct sales thru forum. The baffles can also be found in your dealers Parts Unlimited book for $75 a piece when available.(yosh).

the same reason you would fit an aftermarket slip-on, better sound, more HP, better fit and finish and the fact the 04's came with the best looking set of pipes in many peoples eyes. Ride safe.

I have to give the thumbs up to yamaha as they shipped the bike with a pretty wild set of cans from the factory. Looks even better with the heat shields done in black.

any part #s from the Parts Unlimited catalog for the Yosh or V&H baffle? My friend said he can order from P.U. but doesn't have the motorcycle catalog.

I think the yosh parts are forever backordered and may not even be listed in the current book. Check xfactor and wheatmans old post regarding modifying 04 cansas it may have the yosh Part # in it. I have listed all my parts on ebay as I do offer direct sales through forum as per forum policy.

BAFFLES ARE JUST 2 INCH PERFORATED TUBING. DO A SEARCH FOR PERFORATED TUBING ON GOOGLE AND YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO FIND IT.

the hard part is finding someone that will sell a small piece, many sources want to sell you 500' at a time.

I love the look of the stock pipes so I didn't want to go with aftermarkets. I bought a set of baffles from this guy on Ebay and installed them this morning. Couldn't be happier with the results. Great sound with the stock look!! Thanks bro:rock

thanks for the kind words, my 01 R1 sounds a little pathetic now after hearing the 04 with race baffles.

Excellent mod, i personally feel a great hp gain over 6K RPM I also gutted my y pipe! Will post pictures soon!
