I recently installed a Speedo Healer on my '04 R1. This is a great product that can cure the factory speedo error or the compounded error from gearing changes. It came as a Yamaha kit and is mostly plug and play. However, a suitable power source will need to be tapped into -- one that comes on with the key.

I took these pics a week or so after I did my installation. So some of these pics show the completed steps. But I've tried to explain in detail and the pics can at least point you in the right direction.

Tools I used for this project.

Phillips Head Screwdriver
Wire Cutters
Allen Wrench
Velcro Tape
Pliers
Wire Tester
Razor Blade
Two Quick Connectors
Red 14 Gauge Wire

Remove the seats. Rear seat removes with the key. The front seat is removed by lifting up the rear pad to get at the allen head bolts on either side. Once the bolts are removed, lift the rear of the seat up and it will come loose.

Once the screws are out (they might be very tight) pull the rear end away from the frame and back towards the rear. There are tabs at the front and middle.

Three bolts hold the tank down. One on each side and one near the steering head. Remove all three, but take care not to lose the spacers.

Find the wiring harness on the right side of the bike. It is a white, three wire connector near the frame, behind the engine, under the tank. Disconnect it and connect the SpeedoHealer harness into it. This pic shows the harness with the SpeedoHealer harness pugged in.

On the SpeedoHealer harness there is a small red wire lead. It needs to be tapped into a power source that is 12 volts and comes on with the key. For now, use a quick connector and some wire to make the lead longer. These quick connectors work by pushing the wire into them and then using pliers to set the metal tab into the wires making the connection.

According to the very fine people at Speedo Healer, the red wire lead is long enough to be used to tap into a proper 12 volt source, right there under the tank. So that is another option.

Route the wires under the tank, in between the battery and subframe. There is a rubber shield that I was able to get the wires through/under, so that they follow the stock wires through that location. Be sure to leave enough slack under the tank so the wires don't interfere with the fuel lines or tank positioning.

This is a top view of the wire routing. I put the SpeedoHealer wires all the way through this area to the trunk. The power wire ends under the lock for the trunk. Under the lock area are two wire harnesses. One is white and three wire. The other is off-white and four wire. We'll want that four wire harness.

This pic shows one half of the off-white, four wire connector I mentioned before. In order to have enough room I had to loosen the wires by getting them free of a tab holding them to the subframe. Then I unfastened the connector and pulled it to the front a bit. Next I removed the black wrap from the wires with a razor. Then I was able to test the wires for a suitable place to tap in. Which I did with the blue quick connector and that thicker red wire. The wire I tapped was mostly red and blue, but I recommend testing first.

Lastly I mounted the control box to the 'X' brace in the tail. A little velcro was all it took. If mounted this way there are no clearance issues with the lock mechanism or seat. Plus you can still get at it easily for adjustments.

Where did you buy your SH from? I bought one back in the early days for my GSX-R 600, but I sold it about 6 months ago. Did you order directly from them? It's like 97$ US. I paid $65 back then :(

Any US distributor?
Thanks.

I got mine from http://www.calsportbike.com/cgi-bin/store/index.cgi

They were back ordered for about a week when I placed my order about a month ago. But they were very nice about it and sent one as soon as they could. I was told that keeping these in stock has been tough. But they may have restocked lots of units by now -- and it is worth the wait.

Bummer. I hope they have some good advice about that. I haven't messed with the test function, so I don't know from experience what is going wrong. When it gets adjusted or replaced, could you post how it was fixed?

The connector that goes into the speedosensor (not out to the ECU) was wired incorrectly. I simply used a tiny flathead, popped out the wires, put them in their correct spot (per the doc that came with it). It worked. I spoke to Norbert at speedohealer, he said that they test each SH 2x before it goes out, but it looks like he needs to make sure there is more Quality Control going on w/ the harness ppl.

jumper plug?
I have installed the old v1.6 of the SH and the new v2.0. The old v1.6 I had to splice/cut install. The new v2.0 I had the Yamaha adapter/connector, so there was no cutting needed, only a splice for 12v power.

Vigor_Mortis, I like your install and thanks for How To..

One question though. If I read it correctly, to recall the 'top speed' you have to press the button before the ignition is turned off. If the Speedohealer is in the trunk, and you have to use the key to get to the trunk, you loose your 'top speed'?

If this is the case, has anyone else placed it someplace different?

Thanks
Boss

It seems to me that it would have to be mounted some place other than the trunk to use the top speed recall function. Or you could carry the spare key to use to open the trunk while the bike is still running. Or it could be wired to an always on power source, but then you'd need to install a switch somewhere since programing the unit requires being able to turn its power on and off. This is what it says on Speedo Healer's website:

19. How can I use the Top Speed Memory (TSM) recall function, and how does it work?

The Top Speed Memory is reset at ignition-on and updated during the ride, i.e. the activation is automatic. It can be recalled any time by pressing the button, when the vehicle is not moving. So the operation is very easy, however, you need to have the unit e.g. at the dashboard area if you want to use it frequently. If you want to retain the value of TSM for multiple rides and manually control the reset, connect the red SH wire to the battery positive terminal via a switch. This way the SH will be powered even when the ignition is off, but it won't effect battery performance due to the very low stand-by power consumption. It must be noted that the TSM function is disabled in Transparent mode, i.e. the unit has to be programmed first.

gr8 how to, getting mine tomorrow and can't w8 to finally have the correct speed.

The programming instructions seem complicated though good thing you only have to do it once.\

I'll probably put mine under the main seat as I won;t use the top speed recall, and my pc3 is in the spot you installed at.
