HOW TO: Fit 04-14 R1 Wheels On 99-03 R1

Theres two ways to do it. If you want to use your stock forks to keep the cost down:

Since the 99-03 R1s have 298mm rotors and a 6 bolt pattern, if you want to mount 04 or newer wheels(04-06 R1 have 320mm rotors and 5 bolt pattern rotors) on your bike you can use 03-04 R6 rotors which are 298mm and have a 5 bolt pattern or just buy an 03-04 R6 front wheel complete with rotors. The only other thing you would need to do to fit the wheel is use washers to space the calipers inward about 1mm. What you do is use washers between the fork and caliper.

Or you can change the entire front end, forks, calipers etc... You can keep your stock triples, axle, and the fender will fit.

The Rear fits without modification on an 02-03, use the 04+ caliper and cush drive, and use the 02-03 spacers. 99-01 have larger rear rotors so, you need to use the caliper and caliper mount from an 02-03 for the rear to fit.

I've done both methods on my 02. I first fit the wheels with stock forks, then decided to upgrade to 04+ forks, calipers, and rotors...

Thanks! Very nice write up. I'm about to do this change to my bike!
To bad that swingarm wont mount up! With the shock offset I'm sure thats the reason why ya cant mount it. Looks alot better, and probably functions better too.

Thanks for the info man! If I run into any problems I'll PM ya.

BTW, where did you get your lower fairing section? Looks like all one peice. Looks nice that way.

When switching out the forks will my clips-ons and control switches work on the newer fronts?
Those are Hotbodies Race fairings. The clip ons and everything else will work with the 04+ forks. You'll only need the forks, rotors, calipers, wheels and cush drive for the rear. :thumbup

If your asking about the wheel swap it will imporve it be the 04-06 wheels are a little bit lighter than the 99-03. I notice it when I was swaping mine out.

Well 1st of all the 04 and up have radial brakes and thats a big plus. You will want to keep you 02-03 triple tree because you don't want to change the rake. Handling wise it better because the wheels are lighter not because the forks are different and you haven't changed your rake.

If you don't mind me asking but don't you have full Ohlins?

i dont have the forks only the shock....i was thinking about attempting to pick up a set of used ohlins forks but i can get 04+ forks and have them revalved and resprung for a fraction of some ohlins; i do plan on upgrading the wheels but it doesnt seem bad at all...i can get a sweet deal on some gale speed wheels so i may give it a shot..

Go for it because that is exactly what I did. I was getting ready to spring & revalve my 02 fork had all the parts already to go and the I decided to do the 05 wheel upgrade plus I wanted the radial brakes.

Since I already had the parts (springs & valve kit) for my 02 forks I bought some wreaked forks off Ebay for 25.00 from an 05 R1 had the wheel mount/brake mount bottoms removed and install on my 02 forks now 04 and up wheel mount right to them and radial brakes as well.

Saved my self a bunch of money.

very cool thread......i was wondering when someone might post up about this upgrade........considering the obvious benefits to be had from the suspension and front end set up.......would just like to know if any others have done this just yet.......and if so what is their feedback for this kind of mod..............

Alot of members have done the upgrade and you can't go wrong by doing so. The person who started this thread I believe was one of the 1st to do the 04 and up wheels and front end upgrade and many others have followed his very detailed thread whichs works perfect.

You can also put the 04/06 wheels on and for the front use the 320mm rotors. Braketech makes an adapter to move the binders out to use the larger rotors on the stock forks. I went that way cause my forks had already been re-valved and dialed in for me. Nice adapters and they cost under 200 with tax shipped.

Also, didn't see anyone post it. But the bearings, spacers, and seals from the 02/03 wheels are the same Yamaha part numbers as the 04. I only had to buy the wheels and rotors and used my 02 parts to swap in and used my old axles.

It's a real simple swap if you are confortable turning a whench. :dollar

guys i'm putting an 06 front (forks / caliper /triples) on my 99 and i dont want to change the front rim to 04-06 also , can i avoid that somehow?

does someone makes 320mm rotors for the old rims? will i need some spacers between em?or should i put 04-06 rim and forget about it?

Rim itself is identical, only heavier. Actually, from '98 untill the latest is all the same, only the diameter from the discs are changed throughout the years.

I know Spiegler and Braking make the 320 brake discs with 6 mounting holes. I'm using a '01 rim with floating spiegler discs on my '04. Keep in mind you need discs with 6 mounting holes. The 2004-2006 model have 5 mounting holes, so don't "order" the r1 2004-2006 discs.
Order them by the specifics.

Caliper fitment

i'm also doing this convertion;

i wonder if anyone here knows if the 07 R1 6 piston calipers will bolt up to the 04-05 R1 forks and rotors?

Thanks in advance for your help.

I'm starting to wonder now if that lighter front wheel ('04) on the 2002 bike is causing a buzzing I'm getting (vibration).

I've tried different tires, balancing till I'm blue in the face, heavier bar ends, swapped out the forks to a spare set I had, and even did a complete front end disassemble.

It's almost like the 2002 bike and front end weren't made for a wheel that's lighter like the one from the 2004.

I used the washers from the cush drive bolts, the ones that hold the sprocket on.

How about if I want to go the other way? If I want to put '01 rims on an '04 - do I just need to get a smaller front rotor?
Your gonna have too many issues trying to go this route. 98-03 R1s have 298mm rotors, 04-06 have 320mm. So not only would you have rotor differences, but caliper mounting issues, so you would have to get 320mm rotors that fit 98-03 wheels or swap out the whole front end which would be a downgrade. Also, the older model wheels are heavier.
