HOW TO: Make Any R1 Seat More Comfortable

I have done this to both my 01 and my 05 and it works. The stock seats have too much slope and throw your wieght forward to your wrists not to mention the parts that are plastered to the tank.
remove seat
remove staples that hold cover on, leave staples at back though.
pull cover back and remove foam.
using hack saw blade or bread knife cut foam protrusion that goes into seat off as seen in pic.
I also put a 1/4" foam piece under the front 3-4 inches of stock foam pad to level it a little more.
put foam and cover on and secure with 1/4 or 3/8" staples.
Seat will appear stock but will level out and sink into pan becoming slightly concave which matches your a$$ better.

Nice how to and something i'm gonna do when i find some foam to add on the front. What did you do glue the quarter inch on the front?
you can just tape it as it is held in place by the stock foam and cover. You can use a gel insert from travelcade or old mouse pad or anything in between. I rode 400mi. in a day to San Fran and Sac. on the both bikes with no butt burn of wrist problems. Seat still looks stock too.

Dumb question, but why didn't you just use the foam chunk that you cut off and move it forward on the seat instead of using another piece of foam?
it was not level , it is angled like a pyramid and is not wide enough to wrap around the sides. The stock foam is pretty thin in a couple of spots causing pressure points.. This mod really works.

got any ideas on the passenger seat?

not that i sit on it, but i get complaints all the time about how bad it is.
I just got an extra from a member here and I will post my results. I put a gel insert on my 01 rear seat and it worked great but the 04-05 will need more than that.

yeah, my gf gets on the back, but after going to superbikes adn back (2 hours roughly each way, she swore never to get on again for more than about 30 mins. would be nice to go touring on it, but its not feasable now. though i do prefer to go alone, its also nice to get your laydee on the back and take off for a day

Ummm well i've tried this mod on my 03 R1 and to be honest, after a week of tryin it out... i have'nt really felt an improvement !!

can't understand it as you guys seem to have noticed a real big difference ????
I did both my 01 and 05 and felt it was a big improvement. I am not familiular with the 02-03 seats but my seat were a lot less angled after doing the cut and adding some foam to the front 1/3. There is definitely less weight on my wrists and less pressure on the center of my a$$. If it is worse for you you could always put the slice of foam back in.

LOL,I have an 04 and when you sat on it it didn't (sag, give, flex)it was hard as hell anyway and sloped toward the tank.
Now after doing the ldhr1 mod, my buttocks nestles down onto a softer feeling seat that doesn't slop nearly as bad..
thanks les :fact
