Hello there, trusty forum. I thought I was gone. I was driving my work vehicle to my first stop for the day. Then I noticed to my right a race track I hadn't realized was even there, full of sport bikes racing. It looked amazing. I started to wonder about making a commitment to ride track, and leave the street behind. I've never been to track, but my 05 R1 went through two catastrophic crashes with me before being retired. First one was a deer, that sucked. Second one was a patch of gravel on the side of a mountain vaporized the bike. I was living in this weird realm of riding-not-riding. I couldn't let it go, but couldn't go through this again. I guess it clicked that day I saw the track. Next weekend, on total accident looking at my local track's calendar, I found out Moto America was doing pre-season testing near me, so I went, soaked it all in, had a lot of conversations about what I was thinking.

So, visiting facebook marketplace I found something special. An 06 Anniversary LE. A group A track rider bought it from a collector who had two of them. This was the collector's riding bike, the other one was just for keeps. He went to track for the year until finally he biffed it at relatively low speed. Smashed some fairings, the headlight, fairingstay, half a rearset. The frame, swingarm, forks, engine, wheels... everything important is absolutely immaculate. Everything important looks brand spanking new. Looks like it's frame slider did it's job.

Its got tons of goodies, lots of carbon engine covers, PC5, recent tune, quick shifter, tons of titanium bolts and titanium slipons, Ohlins damper, Gilles axle adjusters, amazing full floating rotors, forget the model but they were expensive. New Pirelli slicks, etc. Aside from the Marchesini wheels and Ohlins front/rear, of course. I am currently waiting on some new fairings, my trusty apex GP clip-ons, Gilles rearsets, odds and ends, just to get it on the road before I spend some time repairing a few carbon pieces.

I paid $5K, the monetary value is toast, but the value and purpose of it's parts is another story. I have a question? Before I get bogged down talking all about my new baby lol.

I have never even owned Ohlins gear before. I kept posturing to buy front/rear for my 05. Almost did from a user here, but chickened out. Nevertheless, I am about 170 pounds. So from the factory, the bikes tend to be sprung for me, right? I like to go to default settings, and adjust from there, usually stiffen it just a smidge from default. What even are my defaults? How do I know?

I found a service manual for https://www.veloxracing.com/downloads/manuals/YZF-R1 2006 Supplement.pdf
It claims its for the 04-06 R1S. Will this be suitable information for the suspension on my bike? The suspension in the manual clearly is Ohlins. Will these be my settings? Reason I ask, the guy I bought it from seemed to believe one fork top adjusted rebound, the other compression. I have heard such things before, but the service manual I linked to seems to indicate that the forks are to be adjusted evenly. Compression is on the bottom, like normal. So did I misunderstand something, or did he?

I can't express how thankful I am for finding this bike. It's my bike, my platform, but so much better. It has everything I could have hoped for being added to my 05. I'm going to be putting non-anniversary schemed fairings on to hide my bikes power level a bit, lol. Wish me luck!

No help with the suspension settings, I am sure someone will jump in that can help on that.
Congrats on the bike and starting your new addiction! 🤙

Alright so, currently she's scuffed. The right side looks pretty good currently lol but yeah. Oh, it also came with a bunch of parts... two new rear sprockets, a whole new KT headlight set (the aftermarket ones with the integrated turn signals and demon eyes... currently $450.. brand new in box, not yet installed), a luimoto rear seat cover and new rear seat if I wanted to install that... oem mirrors... some other stuff, idk. . . anyway...

Here she is before her final wreck.

Here is the proof...

Here is her good side, bringing her home.

Here is her busted side. Not a single scratch on the frame, forks, swingarm, nothing... no binding when I pump the forks... I worry not.

This is the kit I am putting on, along with a full tank cover to cover up the yellow tank. I did bondo+paint on my last R1... I just don't want to have to do it again. This kit was most economical that came with a full tank cover, so it's whats going on. I still have a black tail fairing and black seat cowl... I am thinking of running the tail black.. I think it would be cool to have a black tail, red undertail, maybe? I don't know. We shall see. Front/rear fender is in carbon, still looks good. Most of the carbon is still totally fine looking besides the left side ram air, which I am going to try and sand and put a new epoxy coat on.

This was my inspiration/reference point. The gold wheels, forks, rearsets, red kit. He has the side mount too, which I have always dreamed of. It's a forum member here, if I remember right...

So many things fell into place to make this bike happen, it felt meant to be lol. When I went to go see it, I had zero money. Lucky for me I was the last to see it, and he was going on a week long hunting trip.. this gave me a week lol. In that week I sold my 954rr and an AR15. It was a kick in the nuts seeing my 954rr ride off. I felt like I was dumped. But I love this bike so, so much. I can't wait to fix her up later this week.

If I stick with it, I will absolutely put a race fairingstay on and race fairings. I wanted to now, but I need to get it through inspection to restore it's salvage title. I don't have tire warmers, so I am going to put on pirelli diablo super corsa v4s... if I am still riding it a year from now at track, I would like to put these slicks back on, with new racing fairings... But I want to restore the title for resale value, just in case.

Hey man thanks for posting. With some patience the bike will all come together. I do like the red model with the gold rims. If you go that route, you'll definitely have the best-looking bike on track ;)
But the anniversary fairings on that as well looks like a unicorn that you never want to let go of either lol. Whichever path you take I'm sure you will be happy with it.

Thank you :) My fairing kit is already ordered. Hoping to get it around Saturday if it shipped today/tomorrow. It will be the red kit. And yeah... I usually am not a fan of yellow, but this particular yellow grows and grows on me, for sure. That being said, I don't feel like using an aftermarket knockoff kit to "restore" it... I feel like a lot of it's glory is in it's authenticity and rarity. So I am totally okay just going for a regular kit, and I don't mind obfuscating it's identity a little bit, either. I have always thought the red/gold was really pretty.

Worked on the scuffed ram air a bit today. Looks a lot better, but not where I want it to be. Theres a couple small spots on a couple of the engine covers, and on the carbon underside panels also that got hit with gravel or scuffed. Most of it looks super easy to clean up, but the ram air got a nasty scuff. Ill keep putting elbow grease into it... not going to go buy any replacement carbon since I am planning on taking it to track... Ill get it mostly all good and it will be good enough for me.

Never had a quick shifter or gp shift... I usually clutchless standard shift... but can't wait to habituate to my new (to me) tech.

Hey, yes of course. But I don't see anything in the 04-06 manual covering the limited edition's ohlins forks/shock and their default settings? Am I missing something?

This "supplemental manual" seems to have those parts included:

But that is what I am trying to verify... if this is the information I should use, are these actually my parts and their settings, or is it elsewhere or nowhere...

If you go to page 31 in the 2nd link I posted... that there seems to be my ohlins fork... and later on, seems to be an ohlins shock... but is it? Like, is this my model? Is this supplemental yzf-r1s/yzf-r1sc manual referring to the same bike as the yzf-r1 06 SP or 06 Anniversary Limited Edition? Or if it's something slightly different, is it still applicable?

I think it is, because it seems to have the adjustable lowering link in there also..

Ah, no worries :) I am just trying to verify that I know what I am looking at. For all I know, the supplementary manual I was linking could be some other rare model I don't know about that could be slightly different for internals or settings or whatever. I was confused because the guy I bought the bike from clearly was a capable rider, but the way he was explaining to me the adjustment of the forks was totally wrong from the service manual I am linking, so. Just trying to verify... but yeah, now that I found the adjustable lowering link in the manual... it's gotta be the same...

EDIT: Looks like the SP is the same bike, just a different color scheme.
Also: Looks like my fairings are coming thursday... same as my rearsets! My day off on Friday is going to rule.

#179! Nice. I love the red/gold thing. As far the suspension, the front is spring ante they are adjusted evenly, Right and left. At 170 lbs I would just set sag and put all the clickers in the middle as a starting reference. If you are tracking the bike then you will want to play with the suspension. You also have a adjustable dog bone. Just set that to factory ride height.

Thanks man :) Yeah, the ride height adjuster is a really nice touch. For sure, I plan on customizing the suspension over time. I just like to always start at defaults... since my weight is about dead on for the manufacturer's intent, if I am going to start anywhere, seems like the best shot in the dark possible. Usually I don't stray too far from default, though I have used heavier oil before. Can't wait to finally ride some proper suspension.

Well, I got fairings today. Unfortunately it did not come with decals. It was supposed to. Apparently they are going to ship them to me. I really am thinking though of putting the anniversary decals over the red...

Here she is with some new (to me) rearsets, fairings, vinyl'd headlights. Possibly tomorrow I will install my apex clip ons and my favorite renthal grips.

Need to buy tank grips, yamaha tank emblems, possibly decals, clear windscreen or light smoke for track. The right peg got a little scratched up from the previous owner, otherwise the reatsets are totally clean... I put some heel guards on I had laying around that happened to fit. But I have always wanted to try Apex Mfg's foot pegs... considering it :)

My camera makes it look more magenta, a little. Maybe its my monitor.

So I have talked with the previous owner, he seemed adamant that one fork top was rebound, the other fork top was compression. I have gone with the manual and set standard settings for the forks... and both fork tops were the same setting, both bottom adjusters in unison with each other also, seeming to indicate the manual is correct... BUT... the maximum clicks for rebound/compression do not match... there are more clicks available for top and bottom adjusters. I have not checked the shock yet. However on the shock, the manual says to adjust the big knob sticking out and that its a hydraulic unit to move the collar for the preload setting. However, the preload does not change. Seller is adamant that he had it recently rebuilt and it never leaked. I am very confused.

I have emailed ohlins... waiting to hear back. Bike is otherwise amazing, engine is very very healthy. Waiting on some Diablo Supercorsa V4s.

Is that a user? I went to the members list page and searched for post, and the profile seemed pretty much empty of activity, but maybe I am missing something.

I finally got to take the bike around the neighborhood again after throwing on some new tires, adjusting the rearsets, aligning the front end, and playing with the preload on the forks a bit. Bike feels absolutely amazing. What a beast. Honestly it blew my mind, I was kind of (paranoid) expecting to find maybe the front end has some damage. One thing I found, the rear axle probably had like 20 pounds of torque on it before I swapped the tires. Probably not helping. The bike just felt sloppy and unsure in a lot of ways before and I was crossing my fingers hard. Bike feels amazing, can't freaking wait for track. Feels so so good, and it's not dialed in properly yet.

So I heard you can replace the hydraulic preload adjusters on these shocks with some regular collars and adjuster nuts. I really would like to do this. Anybody have any suggestions for that?
