saw one at a pawn shop near my house and it is priced pretty cheap, $3,600 for a 2008 R1. Problem is, they took it on pawn 3 or 5 years ago (cant remember) and it has been sitting in storage and hasnt been started ever since. They said they wont let me try to jump start it because the gas and oil are bad. Its covered in dust and looks like their story is legit, title is clean and it supposedly has less than 5,000 miles.

I doubt it will last long at that price but wondering if any of you had some tips on what to look for before I buy it. I will have to at least turn the key on to verify mileage and I plan on draining some oil to inspect for metal shavings and what not. Anything else? Ive had 2 Yamaha R6s in the past so kinda sorta familiar with sport bikes but looking for any advice so I don't end up with lemon.

Just my 2 cents, but at that price if it's a clean title with less than 5k miles, I would buy it. Even if you did an engine rebuild or at least tore into it a bit to see how the internals look it would still be a good deal IMO. I paid $5250 about 2 years ago for my 08 and it had 26k on it. A complete motor for 07-08's usually are in the $1500-$2200 range on ebay. You might get lucky and all it needs is an oil change and fresh gas. The whole fuel system probably would need to be cleaned as well. Let us know what you decide. See if they will let you take any pictures and throw them up here. Best of luck.

motorcycles dont go through the gears very well when stationary, so trying that isnt going to help you much - they need to be running / movig to go through the gears due to the design of the gearbox.

at that price, I would buy it in a hearbeat.
Id take it home, drain ALL fluids (coolant etc as well) clean out the fuel system, tip in some fresh fuel and oil and see if it runs.

If I couldnt get it started easily, Id more than make the money back by parting it out.

I cant see how you could lose buying it?

Thanks so much for the replies thus far everyone.

The above is kind of what I'm thinking too...gonna go check it out tomorrow.

What do you guys recommend doing as far as cleaning the fuel system? Id like to avoid taking the bike to a shop if at all possible.

Is their any way to prime the oil system before the first start up attempt or is that not really necessary?

I wouldn't even try starting it after I bought it. I would replace ALL fluids before starting it.

I'd start it and let it idle for a long time before giving any throttle input.

I'd ride it gently for about 20 miles and then drain the oil again and put in another fresh batch of oil. That's probably just me though.

Bike has fairings that are not stock. Most likely it was laid down at some point. Check for frame and overall damage. I'd walk when they won't let you start the bike before purchase.

that's scary, I didn't realize those weren't stock fairings, thanks for the tip.

At what price would you consider the bike worth buying without being able to start it? I already know they aren't going to let me jump it.

BUY IT!! I picked up an ugly '08 R1 recently. cleaned it up, threw a grand at it (tires, clutch plates, pads, chain and such), turns out I got a freaking gem. $2800.

Easily worth the ask but I'm with Dai, try $2500. Don't worry about the fuel system too much, injectors are pretty forgiving. take off the oil cap, stick your nose in there and have a big wiff - uncontaminated oil almost smells like magic markers, strong fuel odor would indicated potential problems. The excuse of bad gas or oil is stupid. Neither will harm the bike.

I walked. I wasn't really lookin to buy it when I noticed it up there the first time (was actually at the pawn shop looking for some video games for my kid) and must have overlooked a bunch of stuff. Missing screws everywhere, some F'd up fairings, exhaust bent up on the underside...plus I noticed this broken piece that is pictured and I guess a sensor goes there? also notice the other (sensor?) hole that someone just stuck an overflow tube in. and it didn't have any oil in it for whatever reason...the lady I talked to tried to act like it was running and driving when they took it in and it hadn't been touched since which was obviously a lie. Total bummer but oh well.

whats sad is some poor sucker is going to buy that thing come tax season lol.

it was about a 45 year old lady...and she wasn't having anything I was saying. like "lady, their is no way this bike was running in this condition, someone has messed with it" her: "no, no, no, no it has just been sitting for 5 years so we cant let you start it" Me: "what are you talking about, it doesn't even have any oil in it why would I try to start it?" her: "$3600 is a great price for this bike..."

it got to the point where I was starting to get mad so I just left, didn't matter anyway I wouldn't have bought it for $2000.

thanks for all the help everyone, and by the way, anyone know what was supposed to be in those holes? you could look through the outside one and see the timing chain...

WOW!!! I would have been so heated.
I thought I got my 08 for a steal 3 years ago now; one owner, 9k miles, $5k. Owner had so many bikes, this was the first new bike he had ever bought and since let it fall to the wayside to his worked cbr 1krr, turbo busa & DRZ. Forgot about it to the point where he had no idea how many miles it had and didn't realize it was in KM; he thought it had 14k miles, so that's what I titled it out only to find out it was in kmph & not mph.

Never buy any used car/motorcycle without starting it first and looking for leaks or weird sounds. For the looks on the pix you provided i would give an offer of 1K

good luck!
