Motor needed for 98-01 R1

I have a 2000 R1 that is in desperate need of a good motor and tranny. If anyone has information on where I can get one or if you have one for sale, please post a reply or send an email to wpowell@gmail.com. Thanks in advance for any help that is provided.

i say get it rebuilt b/c when buying used you don't know what you're getting. in rebuilding you know what you started with and you'll know what you have once it's finished.. Remember, You GET what you pay for.

thanks for the advice. that's what i was thinking, but my mechanic said i am better off just getting another motor and dropping it in there. the problem is my tranny is jacked and it needs a rebuild. he said it's alot of work and if i can find a good motor for a decent price i'm better off doing that.

that sounds like a pretty shitty mech.! telling you to spend way more than you need to just for a tranny? id find a new mech. id rather replace/rebuild a tranny than tear down an entire motor and replace it! just my 2 cents.

yeah he migh be mechanically challenged in the ways of R1's. maybe i will let my fingers do the walking. thanks for the 2 cents and nice pic by the way. :)

he is telling you right, it's cheaper to buy a used motor than to rebuild one.

The labor alone is nearly 1k, then you add parts which will be from $400 to 1k.

The mechanic is right on the mark.

but all he needs is a tranny! he didnt say the motor was bad, the tranny is jacked. but like the other guy said, you never know what your gonna get with another motor, rebuild you know EXACTLY what you getting.

chances are you need at least a 2nd and 5th gear replacement, as well as a shift fork and tube. No big deal to yank the motor yourself take it to him and let him fix it, you put it back in, that's what i did, just take lots of pics while removing. that'll save lots on labor. plus you'll get some hands on

yeah he told me if i pulled it and brought it to him i would save alot in labor. i thought about doing that. not too hard of a job you say? i actually work on computers for a living and have done my share of working on bikes so maybe i could do that. take pictures.... sounds like a plan. thanks for the tips.

um...that would be 2nd and 6th to all you r1ers. 2nd and 5th is suzuki. i would replace 2nd,6th, the fork and the drum. have the dogs undercut while your in there. good luck

i have a 98 engine with a BRAND NEW TRANNY. I literally have like 5k on it tops. 1-6 gear, shift forks, shift drums, clutch were all replaced. Runs perfect. The engine works flawless as well. Only selling cause i parted out to make more money off of her than selling outright. just trying to pay off my 06. Let me know.

man. this sounded good. thanks for the offer, but i actually just solved my problem buy buying another bike. thanks to all you guys for the advice and offers. i learned some good stuff. maybe i'll have a new r1 in 07 or 08.

When I had my frame powdercoated I lifted the frame off of the engine. I suspended the bike from the celling in my garage. I used two come-alongs to hold the bike upright. I then took everything apart and simply cranked. The frame came up while the motor layed there on a wooden craddle I made. It was simple for a one man job. I put it back in the same way.
