My fight with Bambi!

I think i have probably the worst luck involving two wheels in a two month span. I recently just had my 05 ZX6r stolen last month and with the insurance settlement I decided I was gonna bump up to an R1. I purchased a 08 R1 on 5/2 and she was beautiful. Im a wildland firefighter so i havent been able to ride much as I travel around but it gives me something to look forward to coming back home. Today was screaming for a ride and two of my buddies tagged along. We headed out on some back rodes to scrub the tires in and I promised I was going to take it extremely easy as I have been used to another bike for 3 years. I was leading and came around a left hand corner suggested speed was for 25M.p.h and that's when I could have sworn I was dreaming :sleepy: Not one but two deer were standing in the road. I was doing estimated about 30-40 and was in midturn shedding off speed when the decision was to either try and squeeze by on the outer right side or go off the ditch into the downslope of trees. I almost made it, but i clipped the deer on the @$$ end connecting my left headlight and physically made contact with my left shoulder, arm and ribs. I fell into a lowside and somehow i ended up in front of the bike and it just slammed into my back. my buddy behind me almost hit me and the deer as he said it had fell, rolled and than jetted off and all my last buddy saw was the deer running and me sliding. All I could think was, " that didn't just fookin happen!"

I dont know all the damage yet, I just know the bike was unridable. The oil pan and possibly the block cracked and i lost all of my oil and my outlet hose for my radiator completely rashed open draining my anti-freeze along with all the other typical rash and broken peices. seriously, i feel sick right now and cant believe that really happened, the worst part is... the bike reads exactly 99 miles!!! I think i might have broke some ribs because my left side doesnt look right at all.

I have full coverage and was curious if anyone knows whether or not this will fall under my comprehensive and not collision due to the fact no one else was involved??? I've already made the claim and were supposed to work this out tomorrow. Ive been riding sportbikes since I was 16 and this has been my worst fear...

sorry to hear about your bad luck with the two bikes. Sucks to hear your bike is all messed up, but glad your alright!
too bad ya didn't break the deer's pelvis or legs so atleast you could get some good meat out of the deal!
lets see the bike when you get some pics.

I'd think they'd total it IMO

I was under the impression that hitting a deer was kinda like a natural disaster type thing that it would not go against you. Dont quote me on that do you have any of the deer hyde on your bike?? This would help your case out. Glad to hear that you are gonna be ok and good luck with the insurance company!

thanks for all the support. I was hoping to wake up this morning believing it was a dream, but when i rolled over i was reassured everything happened as i felt like someone beat the $hIet out of me :chair: Im supposed to figure everything out today but the agent and I are playing phone tag. It's 90 something outside and killing me. I honestly hope they total it too. I feel like i just bought a wrecked bike and really dont want someone taking it apart putting it all back together again, just doesnt seem like it would be the same. My dad took a look at it and and said my block might not be cracked but rather just the oil pan except there is a bolt that is bent goin into the block that really concerns me. Ill snap some pics today and try and post them up tonight.

Having worked in insurance i've seen it go both ways but here's how it USUALLY breaks down:

"Collision" covers an incident involving another vehicle or person for which you are found to be at fault and resulting in damage to your vehicle. Claims paid under "collision" usually result in an increase in your rate.

"Comp"/"Other than collision (OTC)" covers just about everything else.

Animal hits are usually filed under comp which is usually best for you, however i have seen underwriters and adjusters try to pin animal strikes under collision but they can usually be fought off. Doing so (if necessary) will take a good knowledge of insurance laws, your policy and a licensed friend doesn't hurt either. One case i know the company (won't name it for law suit reasons :p) only backed down under threat of civil contest; so if your company tries to file it under collision knuckle down for a fight.

Who is your insurer pray tell?

My GF is claims specialist for N. Wide and she says that it would fall under comp., act of god kind of thing. So good luck hope you riding again soon.

I live in south Ga and that is one of my biggest fears. I've seen them several times while on my bike but luckly never up close. I'm not sure who makes them, but my brother has one of those deer whistles that are supposed to go on cages. He hooked his up to his bike. Not sure if they even work but he hasn't hit one yet.

I just got off the phone with the claims specialist and I'm ever so happy it falls under Comprehensive :rock and she assured me my premiums wont go up. It was really wierd, but they didn't even asked me what happened. She just gave sympathy and told me what I needed to do to get it taken care of. Unfortunately Im not covered medically and i dont have benies either so it looks like i might just be sucking it up for awhile:drunk: Now i just gotta go get an estimate crossing my fingers it's totaled. Ill keep everyone updated.

as for the comment about Frame sliders, I'm a firm believer and this was a conversation just a couple days ago before this happened:

Buddy: So whats the first mod your gonna get?
Me: Probably some LSL Frame sliders...
Buddy: Huumph. I firgured You woulda done the A & R race baffles first
Me: Yeah Im still learning the bike right now and really all I should do is just take it easy and just protect the bike
Buddy: What... are you scared your gonna wreck!
Me: Naw dude, but you never know...

this buddy happens to be the guy right behind me when i hit the deer. He was also waiting with me while my other buddy went back home to grab the trailer. After everything settled down and I regained my cool he smirks at me:

Buddy: hey bro you remember when we were talking about mods the other day? and you mentioned LSL's???
Me: Dude, seriously.... I dont wanna even talk about it:rant
Buddy: Well wait I just wanted to say that.... if you had those A & R baffles.... the deer probably would've heard you coming and got out of the way:hammer:....

I gave him this long stare as he started laughing:
Me: Your an A$$hole!

he cheered me up a little bit :crash

Good news about he insurance, I also hope they total it - it takes forever to repair.

:lol I know what you mean about the sliders :yesnod

My bike had about 1000 km's (600 miles) on ... I parked it at the mall. Went in to get some stuff came out and here stands a security guard waiting. Gives me a piece of paper and it reads:

"Dear owner of motorcycle, my son ( 6 years old ) went out of my site while I was paying parking and tried to climb on your bike and pulled it over.

Please contact me on +27 4163 blah-blah-blah. I apologise for the event and for leaving but I have to take him to hospital as he needs sutures on his leg and might be fractured" (It think the left foot peg ate the little fugger)

I will pay for any damages that occured"

:chair: So I was pissed off and looked and it was only minor scratches to the left middle and lower plastics, left mirror and fornt left indicator - nothing else. So I saw the little puddle of blood and thought "ag damn - So i phoned the guy - went to the ER quickly where I have worked before and checked on the kid - couple of sutures and bruises only.

The dad felt like shit and we had a look and I told him and estimate of the damage, he said no worries, fax the quote. So I went to buy the parts, fased the invoice and the guy wired the money the next day so all was well.

Moral of the story: Fit frame sliders and keep those little squids on a leash dammit :rant

All worked out well and quite funny in hindsight .... but fook I was pissed off for a bit.

Sorry to hear about your bike. I was a "Hotshot" with San Bernardino County FD (hard job), then I joined the Military to get jumping experience and become a "Smoke Jumper". Well, 20 years later, and I'm still in the USA.

Good luck with your bike!
