Hello, I noticed today that I have an oil leak on the left side of my bike. The rubber gasket thing around the (sensor?) going into my (stator cover) is a little damaged. Does this need to be sealed tight to prevent oil leak or is there a secondary gasket between the actual (sensor?) and the stator cover? Thank you for any help.

Yes there is a gasket, the rubber grommet could get a little sealer to help keep it oil tight.

ok so what does an aftermarket filter have to do with the grommet leaking oil?

the grommets in the covers need silicone sealant on them. if you put the cover on and didn't use sealant that's why it's leaking. but if you've never had that off before and it started leaking out of the blue, make sure the crankcase breather hose is not pinched or plugged up. if the crankcase cannot breath it will push oil out seals from the pressures building inside it from running. this is why all internal combustion engines have PCV valves and hoses to the intake. it pulls a vacuum in the crankcase to remove the pressure.

the crankcase hose is usually connected to the back of the air filter housing to the top of the engine above where the transmission part of it is. (top rear of the engine)

To me it looks like your problem, not the gasket. See the color of that oil in your airbox... compare it to the oil on the side of the flywheel cover. Both seem reddish and significant of airfilter oil.

If you do decide to change the gasket be VERY careful, those parts behind that cover can be a little tricky to put back. So when you remove the cover make sure the bike is on a padockstand and while removing the cover slip your hand in there to prevent anything from coming out.

Good luck!

around the sensor do you mean i have to pull the wire off the stator cover and put the gasket maker on there, put the wire back on, and then put the gasket maker on the side receiving the actual gasket? do i put the gasket on the engine or do i put it on the stator cover? thin strip of gasket maker on each side of the gasket? thanks.

Rubber silicone goes HERE.

Only put it on the rubber sleeve that's around the sensor wire.

Before you do all of this, you will need an OEM replacement gasket from Yamaha. It will be a thin hard material. When you remove the cover, be sure to clean all the old gasket material before installing the new gasket.

Too easy.
