Last time I was going through some twisties when it came on. Today I was going straight line doing over 160 for bout 2-3 minutes and it happened again. The light came on and stayed like this for about 10 seconds. I shut it down and start it back up and the bike ran fine after. The dealer won't do anything unless the light is on when they have the bike, but this won't happen cause they won't test ride it that hard. Any of you guys experienced this before? Also when the bike sits for more than 10-15 minutes when I start it it makes this weird knocking noise for like 5 seconds and than it smoothens.... I wonder why is this? Dealer said it's normal and it's the chain tightner but I'm not sure about that... any info would be helpfull.... thanks in advance...

nobody has commented on this because you were going 160 on a public road. if you haven't learned that by now people don't like that and you will get bashed for doing that...so yeah just a warning incase somebody decided to post on here. and for the oil light did you check your fluid levels and what not? thats all I got.

I had that issue with my R6, Before you ride it again go get some some oil and top it off. (Check the level window when you do it!!) If its knocking you may have already done some damage. Go get an oil change and hope for the best.
yea and 160 be careful.............................

My oil level is always a little abot the top mark. I check it every time before i ride my bike. I change my oil every 2000 miles. I use royal purple. I've been on motorcycles ever since i was 7 so i know how to maintain them. The light is not coming on cause i did something wrong.... Thanks for the info anyways....

I don't own an 09, but I've owned several R1's before, and from my experience, the oil level switch on Yamaha sportbikes are very sensitive to doing this. You might wanna drop the oil level to just below the high mark, and check it cold. Call me paranoid, but I used to use an actual level on the tank to be 100% sure. I think my 99R1 oil guzzler made me this way...:lol Anyway, your oil level being above the mark could be the reason your light is coming on, and too much oil can be just as bad as not enough. Hope this helps :thumbup

Like it was said before, read the owners manual. I am fairly sure it states in there that under extreme riding conditions the oil light could momentarily come on.

What about the knocking noise? It's been doing it ever since I got it. The dealer says it's normal but for some reason I don't beleave them...

To Pilot BG

My R1 2009 has the same problem that yours............exactly the same..........always in extreme riding conditions...........Not bigger problems ultil now. Maybe some problem with a light sensor..........

noobs :hammer:

yamaha oil sensor is a simple float .its not oil pressure sensor like on other bikes.
so , when u accelerate hard / brake hard or going over bumpy surface , the light might come on no matter whats your actual oil level.
check oil level in the glass window , as long as its fine in the glass u are ok.

If it's a deep "knock" I'd have it checked ASAP. If it's a high "tick" that's in the top of the motor then it's normal. Every bike does it. Just get an exhaust loud enough to drown the sound out.

Have you had your cam chain tensioner changed, I have a 2010 and I have had mine changed out twice under a warranty deal, I think it's actually a recall on them, the first one was changed out around 5,000 miles and the second one around 15,000 I'm at 32050 now and it's been fine knock on wood, if it does it again I'm gonna put the graves tensioner in it, I have already done the graves clutch kit which made the clutch a little quieter too and a lot better operation wise

I used to get that on my 05 . It was the oil pan float . It was not staying up it would get stuck at bottom of it's little cage so bike would think oil was low. I just bought a new one and it never happened again . If you have a sight window on side of bike then you should be able to see oil squirting when u rev it . Or get oil pressure gauge tool to 100% see if she is flowing properly . Just my 2cents not sure if even on ball park for your issue just a thing to check if not finding issue
