Performance Mods for 03 R1?

Hey guys!

Have an 03 R1. I just got it. I would like to know what performance mods you recommend I get?

I am looking for acceleration and top speed. Acceleration is first. I just would like to make it much snappier and quicker. Don't need to do 200 MPH or anything but increase speed/acceleration/performance is the key!

It has no add-ons other than a undertail and slip-on pipe. That's it.

I was thinking:

-Full exhaust
-1/+2 in the front/rear sprockets
-Power commander

What else? I appreciate your suggestions and help. Also, what is a great place to buy parts from for this bike?

Graves velocity stacks,BMC race filter,Yosh full exhaust ('98-'03 benefit tremendously from most full exh. systems)the Yosh did very well for a good price +13 hp. about $700.00,-1 +2 might be a little much I would try +2 on rear or -1 up front before both (unless you want to wheelie ALL the time) going slower as a result of having to let off too much ! P.C. 3 usb

I was looking at the Graves Velocity Stacks. Only $99, that's pretty cheap. If I am reading it correctly the velocity stacks are only for the #2 and #3 cylinder, just a rubber part, right?

I found a website that had the Yoshi full exhaust for around 700 but they were out of stock. I have an email into them to see if they're getting more in the future. 13 HP boost is quite a bit, that's nice.

Where do you recommend I get the BMC air filter from? I found this one...
http://www.motorcycle-superstore.co...tore.com/1/5/429/18291/21169/PITEM/BMC-Air-Filter-2003-Yamaha-YZF-R1-Parts.aspx

Is that what you recommend? Do I just buy that and drop it in, or are you recommending a brand new intake system like the Graves Ram Air intake that cost like $500?

For the sprockets, which is better to try first.. -1 or +2? Also, where is the best place to get those sprockets from and what brands are the best? Never replaced a sprocket before.

THanks for all your help, this is great. You guys are a huge help.

Graves Throttle Slide stops and Throttle body stacks too... one gives a kick at 7k, and the slide stops up top

any full pipe will do fine. i havent done it to my bike yet but here good things about the air box mod. best thing is its free but u might not wanna do it till u get a power commander though. stay away from slide stops unless u plan on going to the track a lot. youll get more hp from it but ur bike wont run as smooth even with a pc. sprockets, air filters, and stacks r cheep so why not buy them while ur at it lol.

Air box mod isn't a noticable gain. Its an incremantal thing that if you bike is tuned and dyno'd will help. If you just get the stacks, PCIII usb and a exhaust, and consider a aftermarket filter like a BMC you have a pretty derestricted bike. No need for ECU reflash as our bikes arent restricted in the first place.:)

Stacks for cyls. 2 & 3 correct.just the airfilter, rear sprocket +2 is easier to change,I prefer Vortex sprockets beacuase they are very true on sprocket hub (ROUND) keeps chain tension more even with alot less tight and loose spots to chain, thier black hard anodized versions last alot longer as well compared to most others for only $5.00 more

I put a wolf Undertail exhaust along with modified Micron Serpentine headers to get rid of the EX-Up. K&N, Power Commander 3, Racing Spark Plugs( actually they are capacitor plugs so they give you that extra spark when needed. Sprocket 2 up in the back and 2 down in the front. Steering stabalizer if you plan to do high speed wheelies, trust me it will help with you ball bearings. Dry NOS System with a 40 shot into the Airbox, i also have an 80 shot that I use at the drag track. Velocity stacks, RAM Air Box, Quick shifter, DOG BOX which I wouldnt use often, it tricks the air module to think its getting more air and spit out more gas. I only use that when some cocky Gixxer thinks he can overpower the R1 and the NOS Fogger is not allowed. If your looking to drop some dimes on it you can have alot of fun but if your funds are limited start with the air filter.

The tanks must have been repainted since the Yamaha emblem is not there anymore? What is the mileage and maintenence history on this because if your goona be burning up the streets your engine needs to be flawless and if your going to use NOX your engine will need some modification to handle the tiny explosion going on right below your quevos

Wow, thanks for the awesome suggestions/advice. It's greatly appreciated. I am going to start w/ full exhaust, air filter, pc3, velocity stacks, and +2 rear sprocket (vortex).

Do you need a new chain when you go +2 in the rear? Even if you don't, I wouldn't mind replacing the chain, any recommendations?

Which is better, +2 in rear or -1 in front? I mean which one gives you better performance, regardless of difficulty to install.

Always best to change chain and sprockets together. If you want to save a little weight I'd go with a 520 setup too, with regular maintenance they last just as long as 530 setups but personally I'd go with the superlite steel setup rather than Vortex.
Going -1 in the front is like +2.5/3 in the rear, if you want some idea of what the effects of different setups are go here, you can play around and see the results. http://www.gearingcommander.com/

As for chains and sprockets, good deals and info here :thumbup

No chain needed,if you change chain I would go to a 520 chain & sprocket setup(530 is stock) ,I use D.I.D. 520ERV3,+2 in rear is 2/3rds of -1 in front

Okay I am going to order one next week I think. I have about 6 to 8 weeks before riding season officially is here due to weather being too cold.

Do you recommend ONLY doing +2 rear, or doing +2 rear and-1 in front, is both too much? I am going to order a complete kit so myswell do it the right way.

Sorry for all the questions, new to this :) Never had to mod a bike before.. my previous ZX9R was already customized when I got it.

Motosports has them in stock... Vortex sprockets, -1 front, +2 rear, and a DID chain would be $250. That's not bad at all.

I say leave the slip on and stay away from a full exhasut.

You will pick up power on top with the full system but it kills what is so cool about the 03 motor..that stomping low/mid range. On the older models the exhaust valve actually works as advertised not some sound killing emission passing device.

i put a full system on my 03 and regreted it. If you serach my username I put a completely hidden 40 hp dry shot of nitrous on mine. was a very cool mod

Full systems on 5pw's are limited. If they made sense I'd have one. If my bike was a total tracker I'd have one, but as it's not the gains are marginal, being a tic up top and softens it down low..

Agreed. I geared down my bike and literally put back the stock set up that same day. This is a big with a solid low end. No need to gear that low IMO
