I'm intrigued to know what the score is with speeding tickets etc.

You guys seem to pick them up frequently but are not too bothered. Do you just get fined with no points? How long do you get to pay?

You seem to be able to pick up drinking and driving tickets too but keep your licence?

In a nutshell, over here in the UK you can have upto 12 points before you get banned. Some offences can be anything upto 10 points (I think). You can however get banned at anytime depending on the severity of the "crime". With Gatso cameras and over zealous police forces (driven by the government) it's getting difficult holding onto your licence nowadays.

Drink driving is an instant ban - 12 months and you are fucked for life insurance wise etc - that I do agree with!!!!

its more less the same here, with different rules in different states. the police here arent as overzealous as they are in the UK, but they'll still come after you. ive been pulled over at least half a dozen times on my bikes, and never been written a ticket. it kinda depends on the state, though. cops in colorado are some of the best i have ever run into. not to say that cops who write tickets are bad.
drunk driving, i believe you are supposed to lose your license for at least a year, but i am not sure. you should.

In California if you get a speeding ticket, or other minor traffic infraction, you can take "traffic school" once every 18 months to keep it off your record. Basically you still pay the fine, but they bore the piss out of you in a classroom for 8 hours talking about traffic law to try to make you think twice. If you get another ticket within 18 months, you get a point that stays on your licence for 3 years. Getting nicked drink driving is a bad idea all round. The penalties have been getting gradually worse but usually involves a ban, heafty fine, alcohol councelling, knackered insurance etc. Best just not to do it.

I got caught doing 92 in a 55, the cop lowered to 78. I paid $25 and went to traffic school and it is not on my record. That is in Alabama I once got busted in Wisconsin doing 91 in a 55 and had to pay $175 on the spot with my Visa and my license was suspended in Wisconsin......

Here in Virginia they work on a point system as well: if you receive 18 or more demerit points in a 12 month period or 24 demerits in a 24 month period, your licence can be suspended/revoked. I was caught doing 77 in a 55 (on an interstate!:bs) and got nailed with a reckless, $225 and 8 points! Just to put this in perspective. It made my insurance rates go up (tip: smallpox+plague+spina bifida=Progressive) but your record only lasts 5 years and then it drops off.

In Ohio, you get 12 points and your license is suspended for 90 days. You have to go to class which is 8 hours. YOu can also go to class (if you have like 10 points or so) to take 2 points of your license so you have some breathing room. Points come down in 3 years.

Same here 12 point but to get into trafic school you have to pay about 300-400 dollars. As for drinking and driving it is wisconsin so the fine are not that bad the first time they just have you spend a 1 nighter and fine you with about $350 and 6 points. Speending is $151 and 4 piont at 78 in a 55 and 1-10 over is 2 points and if your are going 85 you lose your licence and if you go 100 it is a felony change.

Here is Florida you can go to traffic school to keep the points off your license but the infraction still shows up the report as "Adjudication Withheld". However, insurance companies evaluate your record as if you had been found guilty. So the only thing traffic school does for you here is stop the state from suspending your license because of too many points. The insurance companies nail you anyway. :butt

As for points.... There basically 3 and 4 point moving violations. Anything 15mph over the speed limit is a 4 pointer and is considered a major violation (translation, insurance companies nail you). I think your license is suspended if you get 12pts in 12 months. Drunk driving laws are tough here and expect to loose your license for at least a year on your first conviction.

No point system here in Iowa, but if you get 3 moving violations in a 12 month time you have to take driving school and they place you on probation for a year if you get even one moving violation in that time your suspended, in order to get your license back you must pay $200 get sr-22 (expensive insurance) for 18 months and get no tickets in that time and then they will resore your full driving privlages again. BTW during that 18 month time if your insurance expires and you forget to renwe it, you must start the 18 months over again and repay the $200 civil penalty again. BULLSHIT!!

Oh and I am going thru this right now! I think it's bull so I'm just paying the $100 to bond out of jail every time they catch me driving! LOL Only been caught 3 times so far!
