Quickshifter OR clutchless shifting

So I've read about how a lot of guys are not pulling in the clutch before shifting. So I'm wondering what the point of a quickshifter would be.

if you ask me, quick shifters are for track use only. a lot of guys here will say they haven't used a clutch for upshifting for decades, literally. i'm a fan of using the clutch, i got 62k miles out of my first clutch, including track days, and i'm at 86k miles on my second clutch. use it and pull it all the way back imo.

The concept is the same.

Clutchless shifts by the operator means when you want to upshift you let off the throttle for a millisecond while applying a small amont of pressure on the shifter. At that point the transmission is relieved of all pressures from the engine and the drivetrain and just slides into the next gear with no effort.

It's the exact same thing that "quick-shifters" do on some new models. It just does it electronically and makes it idiot proof taking all of the fun and skill out of working with the machine for a much more fulfilling result.

Personally, it takes me much longer to manually clutch less shift, and I have to do it without unsettling the bike. On my bike at least, the quick shifter is much more instant, the throttle remains WIDE open, an the bike remains more stable. I expect it may be more down to technique though, I never did shift much without the clutch.

b'eater i've seen you go on about clutchless shifting, but man, seriously, every time i clutchless shift, it's a big jerking motion. using the clutch it's seamless. :fact
With a quickshifter you can have the throttle pinned wide open and still up shift. Without a quickshifter you can still up shift without the clutch, bit you have to let off the throttle.

I had the biggest smile on my face the first time I ever used a quickshifter, to me it is a night and day difference.

I had a Dynojet before I had my current Bazazz unit, the Bazazz is the definate better unit.
What your installed quickshifter does is exactly what you do yourself during a clutchless shift. But with the installed version you just don't have to think about it. I just enjoy working with the machine rather than a device doing the same thing.

i gotta agree mate, on a 600 clutch less shifting is ballz out.. a total blast... on a liter bike... think again.. personally, i hate it... too damn easy to unsettle the bike w/ such brute force behind the beast.. using the clutch is a lot more fun, n' adds finesse to yer ride :flex:

Quickshifters kill the ignition, a lot different then interrupting the throttle.

I always clutchless shift at the track with my track bike.. The only time the bike gets slightly unsettled is when the bike is at about half lean and im short shifting up a gear but nothing that really causes or is close to any sort of moment

Have used my quickshifter on my r1 at the track and it definitely has the edge over clutchless shifting no unsettling at all just pops into the next gear

Have alwys used the clutch on the street or quickshifter

When im riding hard i dont use the clutch. But im saving to buy a quick shifter it will be my next mod. Like others said one less thing to worry about on the track

The manufactory adds the clutch for a reason I would think :duno

When I'm on the gas, I always clutchless shift on all my bikes (street, track and dirt). I use the cltuch when I'm tooling around town, in the woods or thru the pits, but when I'm opening it up, I never use the clutch.

Hell, my DRZ, I'll clutchless downshift too when the mood strikes me.

back in the day --my buddy with the same bike ..same mods .. same weight --had an electronic shifter when I did not .. at the end of a very long straight ..he was a good 5 bike lenghts ahead .. got a bike length on each shift ... that was up to 179mph --flat out 6th gear ...

ever since then ---I will never not have an electronic shifter .. also put over 28k on original clutch w/electronic shifter ..

I usually use the clutch from 1rst to 2nd ... shifter from 2nd to 6th ...

Can you really clutch-less shift with the throttle wide open? CarbonaR1

Probably not. ( if I were that good ). Up-shifted forever without it without damaging a clutch with thousands of miles on them including some novice racing. All about being precise and smooth in your ability. Today's stock slipper clutches much less the aftermarket beauties make it even easier. My Yoyodyne makes up or down silky, even when I blow my management. Definitely something to practice even with a stock setup and beneficial for rider concentration at any level of trying to go fast.

Maybe Im weird but Ive tried it and its jerky and makes me instantly uncoordinated. It is also is counterintuitive to me having used my clutch so long.
Ive never had weird wear or fading because of using my clutch as much as I do..

After finally having a quickshifter on my current bike...honestly I can't see not having one in the future. The difference between clutchless upshifts and an actual quick shifter is HUGE and they are really nothing alike. The quickshifter is incredibly smooth and you could get away with using one mid corner knee down if you had to (not that you should be shifting then of course).

It's a fantastic experience and a hell of a lot of fun.

I use the clutch for taking off from a stop and that's the only time.

Clutchless up and down shifts always. I suck shifting with the clutch, it takes longer and is jerky. I figure it's not hurting anything cause it slides right in with no noises or extra effort.

Edit: I should add that this is all street riding.

Well a few days ago i did install the dyno quickshifter on my 08, BIG difference on shifting..I LOVE IT..well worth money bike pick up speed alot faster at least thats what I felt i did set up it to work after 6K rpm only below that I need to use clutch. But if you dont have one GET one you will love it too!! Cant wait to test on the track!!!!

I doubt anyone can physically shift as quick as a quickshifter. I think it was translogic that did a test years and years ago and found like there is on average a 2 bike difference each shift when using a quickshifter. The best way to test it is 2 up. No matter how you do it manually you upset the bike and often blip helmets lol. with a quickshifter the only way the passenger can tell you're shifting often is by the exhaust tone.

Bazzaz is what I use and it's smoother then hell. No doubt about it :fact

Thats interesting. Never heard it like that before.

Whats your opinion Corey on the Dynojet unit? Ive always been on the fence about getting one, because I ride really only on the street.

Every person I talked to with them said they wont go back though.

Bazzaz doesnt offer anything for my hooptie rig :(

Yep I have a pcIII. I figured Im locked into Dynojet because I have a pcIII, and it looks like bazzaz offers nothing for the ol girl. Still in debate if its a purposeful buy for my riding.

Truth is Im not snapping past 7k to much around here. If I am Im getting taken out or pulled

:lol true enough man, i know where you're coming from, thankfully there's a WIDE open stretch of highway between my house and and school so i can open it up, around town i get screwed like you though. i really don't think bazzaz would ever be beneficial for urban riding like we do.

They are all ok but they are only half a system Flatshifter have a clutchless upshifts and autoblipped clutchless downshifts system , awesome bit of kit
link below to on-board footage of a bike engine in a race car easier to hear and see the clutchless up & down shifts from inside an auto.

There's no autoblip there. That's just yanking it into the lower gear, which you can do on any bike.
