We've gone through this a lot. Try searching this site for old threads "gixxer vs r1".

I don't know what you mean by "what is the comparison like".

The R1 has a much better chassis and brakes... oh and styling. The only advantage the gixxer has is its +10hp.

LOL! I was going to ask the same thing :finger
Now that I wrecked my 10 GSXR 750 I am thinking about either getting the 02 R1 or the 1K

I sat on an R1 2 days ago and that thing feels nice ass hell! Kinda like the tank and the bike were build for my body
The 1K feels exactly like my 750. Only 9 lbs heavier but a ton more power :thumbup
Not to mention that the R1 and the 1K cost about the same so it is not really a price issue...

I guess I have some time till I get the insurance check so I do have some time to decide.
Your oppinions are welcomed but I do want honest opinions and not brand bashing :D

Ride on!

In a recent road and track test by UK magazine SuperBikes the '02 R1 pipped the gixxer. It lapped the Catalunya circuit 2 seconds faster than the GSXR-1000 on average.

The opinion of the testers was that the '02 R1 handled better and was overall more enjoyable to ride than the GSXR-1000. Although yes the GSXR-1000 was faster in a straight line and has a slightly higher top speed... but as soon as you hit the corners the R1 was able to hold a tighter line and the GSXR-1000 ended up crashing twice trying to hold a similar line to the R1.

Bear in mind this is stock for stock...

However at the end of the day it's really down to personal preference. My personal preference happens to be the R1
:D

Its funny that someone would come here and ask R1 vs. Gixxer.

This is an R1 forum so its only obvious we are going to be biased. They are both great bikes and for different reasons.

R1 looks awesome has power and handles superbly.

GSXR Has a little more power than the R1, looks like Sh*t and handles like Sh*t.

hehehe

I understand that people are biast towards their brand of bike but at the end we all ride what we like right :rock
Last years R1, to me, looked like ass but then Yamaha makes the 02 look really sexy :D
Right now, for me, is between the R1 and the 1K GSXR. It is not the money or the looks since I like them both though I am partial towards the gixxer btu who knows...I may end up ridding and R1 here soon assuming I get a good deal on one

the r1 is very umcomfortable, keep that in mind, hour of riding and you'll already feel it in your wrists

jrock-
I gotta disagree with you. My last bike was a 96 GSX-R 750 and the R1 is WAY more comfortable. Any speed above 50 and the wind blast helps to take the weight off your wrists. Of course if you don't do a lot of high speed riding then the R1 may not be that comfortable.

Shadow-
Get an R1, you won't regret it!!!!:yesnod

As already mentioned, the chassis of the new R1 is better out of the box than the Gixxer. I can understand why, I wasn't too impressed with my own GIxxer the way it was stock.

An interesting comparison, though, is one made by a racer I know in Germany. He is racing in Seriensport and Open Xtreme, and has both a R1 and a GSX-R. He took them both to Oschersleben to see how they compared. Here's a tranlated excerpt of what he wrote about it:

----------
Saturday I had the oportunity to test my Gixxer and my 2002 R1 in Oscerhsleben.

Since i know the Gixxer very well (both strong and weak sides), I was of course very excited to see how the new R1 would stand up, and what it had to offer.

It became pretty clear, that the power of the R1 is nothing special. It isn't slow of course, but compared to the Gixxer it is lacking. Out of corners, the feedback of the R1 isn't as good as the Gixxers either, making it harder to feel exactly when you are at the limit. The longer the distance is between two curves, the more the R1 loose. Not a lot, but it costs meters.

The R1 would stand no chance, if it wasn't for the performance of the frontend. The fork is very sensitive, and priovides excellent feedback. This gives you confidense with the bike, and allow you to brake later and enter the corner faster. I had thought that the Racetech modified fork of the Gixxer was close to optimum, but the R1s fork is even better.

The Gixxer also is distubring to ride because of the jumping rearwheel when braking hard. This was really annoying in Oschersleben, and disturbed the ride.

During my lunchbrake, I was thinking that the perfect bike would be the R1 at corner entry, and the Gixxer at corner exit.

I lapped 2 seconds quicker with the Gixxer than with the R1, but the Gixxer had more modifications than the R1 so it isn't a 100% fair comparison. And make no mistake, the R1 is a fantastic bike with good build quality, but it will take a lot of work to bring it up to the level of the Gixxer. However, that is work I look forward to do. I will use the R1 in Seriensport this year, and the Suzuki in Open Xtreme.
