All the testers complained about the yamahas lack of motor (bottom end,mid range Cory West s said it was dead on the bottom and felt like a 600) compared to the others.

Belive it or not all the testers loved the Honda. Said fuel injection was best, motor was electric, best torque curve.

Thanks for the info. Check out that wet weight on the 1098. I thought it would be one of the heaviest. Did they mention the throttle lag issue on the R1?

They didn't complain about any throttle lag. They seemed uphappy about the lack of midrange compared to the others. Yet, most of the testers were fastest on the R1.

I got to buy this mag. Its funny how big a change the results were over their last comparo. I take it they stayed with stock tires?
They used tires the same size at the stock tires. I can't remember which ones..I think pilot races.

Amazing once shyt hit the fan..

Lets see all the hype earlier this year told us:

1) The 1098 being about to "outdrag" a gixxer 1000 in a straight line..

2) The gixxer1000 putting out 174 rwhp STOCK on KWS dyno

3) The R1 being the worst literbike to purchase because of the throttle lag issues

Now that the HYPE is gone and reality is starting to set in..

1) We see the 1098 is just as Ducati as any other before it.. its still more expensive than any japanese bike.. and still performs worse.. and for all those wondering about maintenance and reliability.. go check ANY Ducati forum.. 1098's are stalling left and right and some doing it so frequently it really is putting the riding in danger of getting ran over in traffic.. Dont get me wrong.. give me $15,000 to spend with a free conscious and I'd probably get a 1098 too.. but im sure we ALL remember the Ducati threads being started a few months ago proclaiming the 1098 to be some GOD like bike. All of this praise without it ever getting compared to anything else really seems like a joke now.

2) I've probably said a 100x now the Gixxer 1000 would be the Dyno King.. you'd be a fool to think anyting else.. but would only make about 3-5hp over the competition. And what does RRW find.. that it makes 2hp more the next competitor. Big ****in deal. And I said dyno results you'd find in the REAL world would be somewhere between 165-168 rwhp if it was ever dyno'd back to back with the REST of the 2007 bikes for a more valid result and most importantly on a NEUTRAL dyno (not a dyno owned and operated by KWS who races Suzuki bikes and recieves their support).

3) That the throttle lag on the R1 may suck on the street.. but on the racetrack you'd never notice it because you'd never dip to 5500 rpm to find it. Not to mention I remember telling Slam how the R1 is probably one of the best literbikes for us NORMAL people to attempt to ride very fast at the track. It may lack torque down low.. but that is actually has it positive attributes. Torque is great for doing wheelies, streetriding, and dropping your laptimes if you are expert level racer looking for more Oomph exiting corners 2nd and 3rd gear corners. But for the average person (those people who is faster on the track with a 600 than a 1000) the way the R1 delivers its literbike power is about perfect.

The R1 is about as close as you can get to 1000cc power.. getting delivered in a milder 600cc like form. The R1 really feels like a BIG 600 on the track. That is one of the reasons I absolutely LOVE my R1 track bike.

Power is NOTHING without control.

For whats it worth a few things STILL surprised me.

1) I didnt know the 1098 was that low in weight. Thats VERY impressive. Especially considering the torque advantage a Vtwin enjoys.

2) As much as I rag on the MV Agusta for costing twice the price of Japanese literbikes.. the MV ****in DELIVERS! That shyt is fastest production bike in a straight line (top speed on radar) which speaks alot for its motor and its also looking like the fastest bike on the road racing track which speaks alot for the suspension, frame, and brakes. The MV is a apparently a REAL exotic. Meaning like a Ferrari (and unlike a Ducati) you pay alot more.. but you get alot more (exclusiveness and sex appeal are a given.. but it actually has the PERFORMANCE to back those things up)

3) The Honda only makes 155hp. I figured ALL new literbikes would be much closer. But does it really matter with EVERYBODY raving over how well the 2007 Hondas work on the track AND street. This is the 2nd article I've read from RRW about how the Honda seems to be the best overall bike. Not to mention with the updated, more aggressive styling they arent as boring to the eye either. I think both the 600 and 1000RR are looking very sexy and would now consider one instead of the Yamaha if I was were looking for something alot more street friendly.

4) Who would have thought the 1098 would look so great on paper.. but perform so poorly in real world conditions and ownership. I would have loved to see them use a 1098S because it makes more power and has better suspension bits. But then again you that would mean you are comparing a $20,000 bike complete with big buck aftermarket upgrades to basically stock bikes that cost half the price.

Putting Ohlins, Termi, and Brembo goodies on any of the other bikes and they would be killers too. Not to mention the stalling shyt needs to get fixed IMMEDIATLY as its a turn off to see a bike that sexy with problems so irrating!! Thats like dating a woman as beautiful as Angelina Jolie only to find out she has a terrible stuttering problem.

3 months ago I was ready to purchase a 1098 completely uninformed.. Hell I even made my girlfriend promise that if she got her engagement ring.. I could get a new bike. But as real world results are starting to creep in about the 1098.. my interest with it seems to be quickly fading.

They did use a 1098S.

what makes the Gsxr 1000 the winner? only won on the dyno right?
The Gixxer 1000 has been the better bike only cause it handles and rides like a 600.
I am still unsure if I want to get the Gixxer of the New R1.

How does the 07 handle compare to the 04-06?
I still can't understand how the fastest bike looses a comparison in Road Racing World....so much for unbiased!

I must admit, after reading the article and not looking at which bikes scored the most points...I thought the R1 would/should have won. It WAS the fastest bike around the track in the hands of the majority of the testers. The R1 kicked ass in the 2 most important categories IMO

**Best Overall Lap Times By Rider:**
Chris Ulrich 1:40.55 MV Agusta F4-1000R
Jeremy Toye 1:40:84 Yamaha YZF-R1
Cory West 1:43.20 Yamaha YZF-R1
Ed Sorbo 1:44.95 Suzuki GSX-R1000
Frank Aragaki 1:48.00 Yamaha YZF-R1
Michael Martin 1:49.47 Yamaha YZF-R1

**Average Of Riders' Best Laps By Bike:**
Yamaha YZF-R1 1:44.89
MV Agusta Fr-1000R 1:45.28
Honda CBR1000RR 1:45.60
Suzuki GSX-R1000 1:45.64
Kawasaki ZX-10R 1:45.72
Ducati 1098S 1:46.70

There were Subjective Categories for points like Engine, Chassis at Corner Exit/turn-in/mid-corner, braking, tranny, etc. So after all the points were tallied up, the Gixxer came out on top. But all those subjective categories are just rider opinions...the facts are the lap times and the R1 more than held its own around the track. :thumbup It was a pretty good test though..I would definetly recommend buying the mag.

Master Bike just wrapped up in Europe and the MV Agusta 312 won. Wonder if RRW had the "R" instead of the 312? They split up the Japanese and Italian superbikes with the MV Agusta F4 312 besting the Aprilia Factory and the 1098S. The R1(!) beat all the other Japanese superbikes. Came down to the F4, R1 and the 695 with the F4 winning overall, highest number of fastest laps per rider, etc...

My MV handles much better than my R1. The bike feels lighter and the engine is far better. Given it is a 03 R1 so I know it is down on power from the newer R1's. With the mods I have on my bike BST, Ohlins, brembos, and Akra you would think it would handle better. Just my 2 cents.

The R1 could have done better....

Im sick of the R1 being robbed of its potential... and Suzuki always takin the cake...
Im sure we all know the R1 would be a beast if Yamaha wasnt keeping up with the Jones with the tuckpipes....

The MotorcycleUSA findings pretty much underline the dyno results and the track/street results from RRW. While I believe the RRW results to be the most valid in both cases.. its good to see 2 very popular sources testing these bikes and concluding the same results.

The Honda should win the "most improved" award in my opinion.. as it appears to be the most impressive when compared to last years machine.

maybe i missed it but what are the official hp and top speed numbers for the mv agusta? i had no idea they were that fast! given all those numbers it looks like the R1 did very well. and if i were rich screw the duc i'd grab an mv.
