Interesting Moral and Ethical Situation...

Thought it might make an interesting new thread! - Initial Post was on" R1 as first bike" sticky...

Thanks bestman77!

"WRITTEN BY BESTMAN77"

I was at the dealer last year picking up the 05 R1, I had picked up an 03 R1 from the same guy a couple of years earlier..So this girl, (hot as hell if I might add ) , she is set on getting an R1..I hear her conversation with the salesman about how she can certainly handle the R1..and the sales guy there is being very nice to her trying to convince her to get something with a bit less power...her exsecuse is she had ridden dirt bikes when she was a kid and she knows what she doing..again the sales guy tries to explain to her the different in power/handling between a street bikes and dirt, not to mention, this is an R1 she wants..and she only rode dirt bikes years back..but the hottie will not budge.
sales guy asks her, why do you want the R1
chick..'cause it pretty.. (i kid you not)
dealer..what about the R6, its pretty too.. (too much for her too IMO)
chick..no I want the black one
dealer..its your lucky day, i have a black R6 i just got today, its still in the crate!!!
chick...sooo, can I have it today?
dealer..um no I have to set up first...maybe 2 days?
chick, no that’s too long
dealer....ok I think I’ll get my guys to knock out by tomorrow noon..
chick umm..no I want it today..
dealer (his patience is wearing thin) can't today, the guys in the shop left for the day, I’ll have it ready tomorrow...mean while a guy on a black R6 pulls is..
chick...is that the R6 just pulled in?
dealer..yeap, see how nice?
chick..she goes to take a closer look...um..no, i like the R1 better..
dealer..i'm sorry but the R1 is too much for you, I don't if I can sell it to you..you'll hurt yourself, sorry
chick...(with attitude) listen i'm kinda tired of this conversation, you can't legally stop me from buying whatever I want, so lets get the paper work started..ugh..
dealer.. GET OUT!!.
chick ..what??
dealer, u heard me, get the heck out, I won't have your death guilt over my conscious for the rest of my life to make a sale!!
chick walks out crying...
dealer then looks at me...What do YOU want..(he knows me by name)..
ME..I want that pretty bike over there...

WOW!

Thats a tough one for me. Being a rookie sport biker, knowing how great these look, being an ex-salesman, and working in a Hospital for almost 20 years...Reading this was like being on a roller coaster of emotion...

I understand the salesman's POV. (Point Of View) yet, at the same time, its his job to sell dangerous machines. Thats the line of work he decided to work in. If he owned the shop, I could maybe see it. If he worked for me, he would be fired with-out coming to me first to discuss this sale. If she does die, how would he know to feel guilt. Technically she could sue couldnt she??, under sexual discrimination, saying they wouldnt sell cause she was a chick? Its really a controversial story man...interesting...there are some wicked moral and ethical principals at work here from two very different POV's! The problem might be now, that shes mad, and will get a bike no matter what, and to prove that salesman wrong, might ride it harder and die sooner....with a note in her pocket saying it was all his fault....YOU NEVER KNOW! -- stanger things have happened...

From a Salesman POV, In my opinion, hes not her father, mother nor GOD. He's a motorcycle salesman that didnt do his job. She's qualified legally to buy one. Its not his job to qualify every person in a 5 min conversation who walks into the dealership as to whether is moral to get one or not.

From a Hospital Workers POV, he might have saved her serious injury FOR NOW! And save his CONSCIENCE!! Im happy shes safe...for now!

He was willing to sell an R6 no prob, but not the R1....thats interesting though!

Could he draw up the paperwork and at the same time ask for an emergency contact person (hehehe- like he needed one...) and then excuse himself, go in the back and call that person to come down and talk sense into her, while drawing up the paperwork...at least if the paperwork finished and she took the bike, he could say he tried...but still got a sale...

This is a tough one...what if it was one of us guys and wanted one with no experience...we would be ON FIRE, if he told us to get out.....

Any thoughts on it guys...

I also would have refused to sell it to her! That girl probably would have ended up like the gal in the papers a few days back. Either dead or feeling like she was! Depending on how big the girl was, I would have weaseled out of it with a "Weight requirement" clause or some shit like that! If the chic was only a buck-10, then there was no way she could handle the R1 with the experience she had!

I actually applaud the salesman in the fact that he put the safety of someone he doesn't even know b4 a commission, knowing that if she didn't buy from him, she would just go down the street to the next dealer. I might have tried some different ways though, like needing a valid MC license, Motorcycle safety course, or some other BS. But then again, I do thing the dealer is in the wrong business because being in sales is all about the money, and then FUSI (F@ck U Signed It.) and unfortunetely doing whatever it takes you make your money.

Cuz I'm sure she didn't just go down the street and get the same one. I would have fired the salesman. I'm sorry the R6 isn't a starter bike either. If she's gonna kill her self it doesn't really matter what bike she gets. Let's see where does the 1 have all its power? the 6 is alot scarier down low. It would probably been safer to sell her the 1 IMO.

The sales guy should've sell it to her, it's his job, sell bikes!

As for his consciousness, he warned her about THE one, that's actually all he could "professionaly" do.
I disagree. It's about like selling alcohol to a drunk, and then giving him the keys to drive home. Are you crazy? There is no way in hell a 100 pound girl could handle an R1 up top .... much less on the twisties. :no

She wanted an R1, you obviously never knew any woman that was really stubborned on something :lol
Seriously, if she really wants the R1, she'll find someone, somewhere on earth, that will sell it to her :yesnod

A lady came into the shop today, and being a little older, most of the salesman presumed she had a scooter. Turns out she came in for a rear tire on her 02 R1. She told our service manager that she had another R1 in her garage at home.

I bet that salesman owns an R6 and couldn't stand to see a chick own a better bike than he does.

I don't know about this. I've ridden with a few groups and I know of 2 women that ride 04/05 R1s. I think it really depends on if the women or guy can ride. As long as she has riding skills I don't see any reason why she should be turned away. Granted if she just wanted it because it's pretty and doesn't know how to ride that's one thing.

So he is insecure by being bested by a woman. Then another insecurity on engine size. That's one insecure dude... Do you know him personally?

I picked the R1 because it was prettier than the Honda or the Suzuki. Kawi didn't have one at the time. Of course I used a different word like hot, cool, awesome,... If she has an Motorcycle cert on her license, the state has found her to be competent enough. This isn't a moral issue when it is about choice in a pluralistic setting. The issue is about being stupid or smart.

Let me clear one thing up though, The dealer was pretty hesitant about selling this girl an R6....I mean if she walked in wanting to buy an R6, i think he was gonna try talking her into something less..but since she was soo set on the R1..I mean, she was incredibly stubborn on the getting the R1 because of pretty much the looks..the dealer figured he'll cross his fingers and just sell her the R6..but again..he wasn't even comfortable with that..
I'm sorry but i'd hesitant about selling this girl anything more than a scooter, seriously..personally I respect the dealer for his decision
