Last Monday I went on a trip with a buddy of mine who just purchased a Suzuki GS 500 after completing a motorcycle safety course not more than a week ago. We headed down to Cranbrook B.C. from Calgary Alberta; the trip was about 400 KM. All the way there he tailgated me. I kept pulling over to tell him not to follow so closely and that if I have to make a right hand turn he won’t be able to react fast enough to my signal and brake light. Anyways, we made it to Cranbrook fine. We had some dinner and then decided to head on out to explore some of the good back roads nearby. At this time the sun was starting to go down and it was getting dark. We turned onto this road that had a litter barrel turnout a few KM ahead and I figured that would be a perfect place for turning around and heading back to town. As we were cruising down this road I realized I was about to miss the turnoff; I grabbed both brakes pretty hard and signaled. I slowed down to about 5-10 KM/h and all of a sudden I hear “HADRIANNNNNNN!!!” I saw him in my right mirror coming at me. By this point I had already half made the turn, but I quickly reacted and steered as hard to the left as possible to prevent him from hitting the side of my bike directly. In the end he locked up both his wheels and hit my leg. He scuffed my brand new Dainese Nitro suit and bent my foot peg in. He wiped out but hardly did any damage to himself or his bike—a little scuff on his exhaust pipe and some road rash on his knee.

I am grateful that the accident wasn’t a lot worse, because it could have been a disaster had he hit me dead on. I’m just frustrated that he 1) followed me too closely and wasn’t able to stop, and 2) wasn’t able to counter steer around me. If he had enough time to scream out my name he had enough time to react to what was in front of him.

Anyways, the triangular bracket of the right rearset was bent inward. I’ve ordered another, but it’s going to be three weeks coming in!!!!! They are on back order from Japan… :( It’s too bad I can’t afford the Sato rearsets right now.

Not having been there, I have to say, knowing somebody was following that close, I wouldn't have braked that hard just to make a turn. It could have been a lot worse if a car was following.

Just my .02
Believe me, had I know he was THAT close, I wouldn't have braked. And yeah, it could have been worse had it been a car.

Thanks for letting me know. :) I really only need the triangular bracket for the right rearset... the dealer wants $56 Canadian for the piece. Are the rearsets you have stock ones from an 02-03, or are they an aftermarket set?

How's your leg any bruises?
My leg is pretty good, thanks. My leathers took most of the blow (that's what they are there for, right?). I'm just a little bruised behind the right knee. No biggie...

im a beginner, and im glad i read that. my buddy would be pissed if i plowed into his rr...

:) I'm sure you'll be fine. Everyone just needs to remember that they have to follow at a safe distance.

Anyways, thank God for E-bay. I managed to find a right foot-peg bracket on there. Now I'll be waiting about a week instead of three. :D

Just an outsider looking in getting one side of the story, here goes..

Your friend sounds like someone who's just not meant to ride bikes. I'm sorry, but I would ask him to pay for the damage since it's his fault :fact Geeze, and you'd just warned him to back off
I thought about making him pay, but he's a good friend and has helped me out a lot in the past. As annoying as this little accident was, it is not worth getting into all that for a $50 part in my opinion.

Definitley need some sato rear sets. I simply love them!

I'd love to have Sato rearsets... I'm probably going to place an order next spring for some since the riding season is almost over now for me and I've already spent enough on my bike this summer. :)
