hey guys, i have a 03 r1 with 7600 miles on it..
i recently bought it and today took it out in 40 degree weather for a ride..
and this was my first longer ride on it other then few times around the block.

and i noticed only the front breaks were squeeking when i hit the brakes..lightly or hard they were squeeking..

do you guys think it cuz of the weather or the pads are gone>>>?????

please help out

thanks

Simple way to check if the front pads are gone is to look at them. They're not like a car where you have to pull a wheel off. If they squeal during all breaking they might be done for. If they have good pad left on them you can try the car fix of putting a very, very light coat of grease on the back of the pads where the pistons contact the pad back. You can also get some sandpaper and scuff the surface of the pads and rebed them with the rotors. Just a few suggestions.

Most calipers and pads have the same basic design. The back of the caliper has an open square that you can see the pads through. Most pads have two sections (or possibly more with some brands) with a groove cut between them. If the pads are worn to the point where the groove is gone or just barely visible then you could stand to get some new pads.

If both pads for both calipers look like that then the pads shouldn't need to be replaced.

yep they look good...
so wat is with the squeeking..??
could it be due to the first longer ride of the season...
it just came out of storage. so maybe the brakes didnt heat up all the way
and they were making noise..
could that be???

Was the squeak constant or a kind of pulsing (squeak, nothing, squeak)? If it's a pulsing it might be a slightly warped rotor. Does the brake lever feel slightly soft when you first apply them after riding for a while? That would indicate the same issue with the rotor as above. If you have a front stand you can check the rotor by lifting the bike and spinning the wheel to check for a specific point where the wheel stops or has an abnormal resistance at any one point while you move it slowly throughout a full rotation. And in the end sometimes brakes squeak no matter what you do.

i hope its not a bad rotor.. but after work when i go for a ride i will pay more attention to see if the noise stops and starts again or if it is constant...
if it is constant would that mean bad rotor also or another cause?

how long did the bike sit before you bought it / took it out for this ride?

my brakes squeak sometimes after the bike sits for a while but once the brakes get heated up a little it goes away
