Starter Nightmare!

Can't find any definitive answers. I apologise if this has been covered before but....

2006 R1.
Starts perfectly well in the morning. Each and every time.
When I went for a ride last weekend I was in stop start traffic and the temp increased but within what I would expect. Fan comes on and cools the bike well. I turned the bike off for 4 minutes waiting for my mates to catch up and she would not start. When I push the start button, electrics go to sleep and tries to turn over then nothing. When I take thumb off the starter electrics come back to life.
Roll start no issues and started perfectly in the morning.

So far I have:
Cleaned the contacts at the battery (new battery)
Removed the starter and cleaned the armature (not an easy job when you have big hands, lost a load of skin...) and she burst to life like never before.

Not sure if the problem may be the starter solenoid or the voltage regulator rectifier.

Has anyone come up against this in the past? Any help greatly appreciated.

Roll, pop, is roll start? Easy as does it with ease.

Good deal, since she will roll pop, check your safeties, like the neutral switch, clutch switch and kick stand switch. Also check your ground connections and inspect the harness for any pinched, broken or corroded wires or connections.

Download a copy of the service manual and find the test procedures for the starter, starter solenoid, battery and rectifier regulator.
