Does any one have details or steps on how to change out the swingarm?
Details are sketchy right now on what to do and what to replace. I heard I might need to change out the bearings as well :dunno

Any inputs?

I changed the swing arm on my 02 this past winter. I pulled the tail piece off, then took two ratchet straps to the subrame, one on each side, and attached them to the rafters. I jacked it up enuff to get the wheel off the ground. Then, pull the wheel, pull out the main pivot bolt throught the swing arm/frame. There are 2 bolts on the shock, top and bottom, pull it out as well. Then reversethe steps to put it back on. The swing arm i put on had bearings in place already because i bought it used. So I cant help with that. But I am sure you can buy them from Yamaha if needed, and put them in with a hammer and a socket. Being careful not to damage the bearing!

Are you replacing with another 1998 R1 swingarm? You might need to change out the bearings if the bearings have lots of miles on the new arm and cracks or deteorate of the hard plastics material (little debris in where the bearings are). You will need to remove the chain from the old swingarm, but if you are replacing the chain also, you do not need to. Hopefully, you can get the chain of off the front sprocket.

I fitted a 2002/2003 swingarm to my 2001 R1, Fit perfectly. I also use these items from the 2002/2003 R1; rear brake & lines, brake mounting bracket, rear wheels, spacers, rear cush drive, and rear axle & nut. You don’t have too use the rear wheels, spacers, rear cush drive, and rear axle & nut. You can still make the 98-01 wheel fit to the 2002/2003 swingarm but with a new spaceron the brake bracket side. Reason is the 2002/2003 swingarm is a tiny bit wider.

PM me if you need something to be answer.

Its getting replaced with a 98-99 swingarm. And yes, I am replacing rear sprocket and chain. I might as well change out the bearing because there is no knowledge of the current bearing milage.

THanks ckhangr6. I will hit you up if i have any more questions :thumbup

One more question, which involves support. What can I use to support the bike itsup in the air? I read to maybye putting a jack stand on each side of the bike to help keep it up (under the pegs)

you answered your own question but I dont know if I would trust the pegs to hold the bike up they have a hard enough time holding a person much less the bike.

I seen someone hold their 04 up the same way while they did all kinds of repairs. It is supposed to real secure as long your place it under the bolts.

LoL, you hurt my feelings!:cryin

No, the way they are talkin sounds better. I actually pulled the tail piece off, then attached to the subrame, like under where your seat attaches on both sides. But my bike was stripped already, because it was the winter! They are giving you a way to not do all the striping down of the bike. Was just palyin with ya peter, dont get hard on me!!

No hard feelins :riding
