The "Yamaha tick"

So.. My 2001 R1 I've ridden some 10k miles in almost two summers myself now (has 44k in total in the odo, impossible to say if that's all or not, the bike's been crashed and repaired some time before, 2nd hand import bike it is also.) Anyway, the tick has been there most of times, has been quiet too some periods, but now it seems come to stay. The tick starts now at about 2,5 krpm, not sure if it's there after 3 krpm cos of the roarr.

It's clear that it's not the valves (the 20), it sounds like smth's loose maybe. AFTER 17 YEARS OF THE HISTORY OF R1 "YAMAHA TICK", HASN'T ANYBODY GOT INTO ROOT OF THE PROBLEM, WHAT IS IT THAT TICKS? :)

nope. anyone without motor building experience is doing more harm than good with a manual tensioner. they have to be adjusted every oil change or so. the stock tensioner is fine. besides the sound isn't the tensioner. it's just the valvetrain. yamaha has one of the longest service intervals on valves too. 26,600 miles between checks.

the 2015 has a tick also.

Sorry, you didn't specify in your original post that it was on the left side. You said it's definitely no the valves... I assume you checked them? I'll leave this to other, more knowledgeable members, but I can't think of anything on the left side of the bike that would cause what you're hearing.

The noise can be related to a couple of things - slightly loose valve guides or too much cam to bucket (valve) clearance.

When I did my engine rebuild this past winter I checked all the valve guides and replaced a couple that were over specification. I also set all the valve clearances to the tight side and the engine runs extremely quiet now.

Yea, my clearances were all more in the tight side too. Specs r:
0.11 to 0.20 mm for intake and 0.21 to 0.25 mm for exhaust (Europe model 00' and '01)

My exhausts were at 0.20 or bit over for #2, #3 and #4. For #1 exact 0.20 and not quite 0.20 for the other.
Intakes were less than 0.15 for #2, #3 and #4, and also for two of #1, and 0.10 mm for one.

So #1 had some valves with bit too tight clearances. Nthn to worry about, told by the car mechanic friend of mine B-)

This one is seemingly more obvious, but when my R6 went over it bent the stator cover and then it REALLY had a tick to it. After I had changed the cover there was a little tab to hold the stator wires in place that I had bent a little bit moving it over to the new cover, and it was rubbing. Took it apart again to fix, and the tick was gone. That being said, it could just be a characteristic of the motors.

are you absolutely sure its coming from the engine? I mistook an aging front sprocket for engine tick once

My R1 ticks... and quite loudly today.
It has it's moments, some days are quieter than others. Also depends on how fresh my earplugs are .

My CCT is coming up for replacement, but I think the noise from the CCT is more of a "tuk tuk tuk" than a ticking noise, due to the sound of the cam chain hitting the guide.

Really hard to tell.. for the past 10000+ km's I've done on my bike, it's been ticking. No noticeable loss in power for me. The tick is starting to sound like it might come from the headers, but I'll inspect it properly as soon as I have a chance.

Diagnosing sound issues over a forum... you're not likely to find a definite answer as everyone's definition of the tick seems to be different.

Ride it until the wheels fall off, and get a loud pipe to silence the tick.. and some earplugs, that also helps
