Thoughts on why R1 is best street bike

Why would you choose an 04-07 R1 over any year R6 for a daily commuter and weekend warrior? Or would you do it the other way around, R6 over the R1?

Just curious. I've had a few R6's over the years as my daily commuter but the next bike I get I'm trying to talk myself into the R1. It's been my dream bike ever since I started bikes but the thought of not being able to use most of it's power until I get to a track day kinda discourages me. And I know my way around the R6 but want something different. Maybe a dual sport instead? Thoughts, opinions?

What all of them have said is true!^ That said the R1 likes breathing room, The R6 in my opinion for what that is worth! Is better suited for running around in the city than the R1 is. The R6 you can use more of the gears in the city, The r1 you wont need more than 1st and 2nd. I would choose the R6! What distance would the commute be? If it is a long one I would go toward the R1 for that!

Commute would generally be around 50miles round trip with the weekend fun rides being a good hour away. And I like to take plenty of road trips and I think the R1 would be better suited for that as well. When I sat on the R1 it felt more comfortable than the R6. Especially the newer R6's feel like you're sitting on a perch.

I used to own an 08 R6, great bike but never really had the power I was searching for and felt a little cramped. Being 6'2 and 240lbs probably didnt help. lol

Now got an 06 R1 and loving it. Travel about 190miles a day round trip to and from work and definately do not regret getting the Litre bike. Although the R1's dont like city traffic to much. Luckily my run is all 50 - 70mph posted speed limits.

If we're talking best for the street I'd go with '09+. The bottom end of the crossplane will be more useful on the street than the top end of a traditional I-4.

Noone should buy a 600 or 1000 cc bike to just "put" around town in. The 600cc bikes are nice but the hp and torque of the 1 liter bikes makes passing cars easier(regardless of whether you are in the right gear), you dont feel like your abusing the bike by riding fast, and being 6'1" and 200 pounds it is the most comfortable bike i have ridden. 600cc bike is slow in comparison to a litre bike. Believe me you will find a use for an extra 60hp.

While I agree the 1000 makes for a better road bike, 600s are not slow by any stretch unless all you do is go 130mph plus on straight roads with no corners. As Below :)
World Superbikes running the best brakes you can buy with the best forks you can buy, 220+bhp and slicks are only 2.5 - 3 seconds a lap quicker than the supersport bikes on a Supercorsa threaded tyre with standard production calipers and forks. And thats with the top riders who can exploit them

I agree with Batmantis. I have had a 600 come past me a few times on the race track with a much better rider. The only time I have to catch them is on a long straight. If you have a track without a long straight and a lot of turns I would prefer an R6 over the R1. But since you do mostly street riding and it sounds like you have already talked yourself into liking an R1, get one. :)

Honestly I've never owned a 600 and never wanted to...went from a 750 to the liter to a big twin then came screaming back to the R1 for the simple reason I fuking love this bike and honestly I like all the R1 models....simply put if you want it just get it and fuk everything in-between

And for fun facts I find my 2010 more comfortable then my 06 was...although I wasnt sure it would be when I flew to NC to buy it and rode it back NJ 596 miles first day...6'3 250lbs. But it's a comfortable bike for what it is..although if I was really worried about comfort I'd get a touring bike

Katt, just buy the darn R1 already... Geeze, youve been waiting forever for this. I bought my 09 at the end of 09, and havent regretted it a single moment since. You HAD the r6,(i still have mine and run it track only) but, you've seen what the r6 does, and I know how you used to ride... As long as you respect the r1 like you did the 6, you'll be fine broski.
Get it and have fun. Let me know when you're riding again, and hopefully we can meet up and burn some fossile fuel together.

Keep us posted

I've actually gone back and forth a few times from a 600 to a 1000, then back to a 600, then to a 929,then back to a r6, then the r1. The 600 just doesn't thrill like the liter ... plain and simple. You want the liter bike ... go get it!

I like the liter for the street. 1st 2nd and 3rd gear ftw!

Track, 600 all day so i can shit on those with big egos that "NEED" more power

r6 r1

i have owned 7 r6 road bikes and liked thrashing every one of then from the first carb model to the latest fuel injection model ,i have also owned 4 r1s and for the road i would prefer the r1 simply just for the power but i could go as quick on a r6 as my r1 on the road but its hard work keeping the r6 pinned at high revs. the r1 is a lot less effort to ride fast but on the track i prefer the more useable power of the 600.

I've went from riding middle weights to liters just recently and questioned my decision initially. But now after a few months i dont think i could go back. I didn't realize what i was missing in terms of ridability. I love the torque a liter provides. Maybe if I was smaller i wouldn't mind the middle weights but at 6'1 225# the r1 is great.
