To stretch or Not to stretch....

Upon being a new Ryder I'm asked often by random people I ride with whether I'll modify my stock 03' R1. Both sides are compelling yet I haven't been riding long enough to know my style. Please give insight.

I agree. Modify to your liking for looks or performance or both. Stretch only if your going to drag race it. stretched bikes with wide rear tire may look cool but ride like shit and its expensive as hell to do.

But first you gotta figure out what kind of riding you plan on doing on that bike before you modify anything.

Much appreciated, I'm doubting at this moment because this is my first bike, first R1 and its too fun. Maneuvering isn't easy as is and I don't plan to drag. Ride now it's all about my ride. I really like the look of it stretched. I'm a big dude 6'5" 250, so the stretch would fit for me but performance I see room for improvement after being on this forum. Any suggestions???

If you're going to drag it, extended swing arm helps a ton. If you're still new to the bike and riding I'd just stay stock wheel base and do the other bolt on mods like exhaust, filter, power commander + tune. Get comofortable on the bike and then see where your interests lie.

Take it to the track a few times after you get used to it and if you fall in love, stretch it!

if you feel like your size is making the bike a tad cramped for you then there are 3 things you should look for.
1. aftermarket rearsets, they allow you to move the pegs around a little bit - get adjustable ones and find a spot thats more comfortable for you, most guys raise the pegs for racing, but you can get a fair bit of adjustability.
2. bar risers/different clip ons - lifts the bars so you wont be quite so tucked in.
3. longer clip on tubes - means your hands will be a little wider on the bars, with the added bonus that it makes turning the bike a little easier as well.

combine those three things and youll have a little bling, and a more comfortable ride for you if you mostly just street ride. stretching isnt the answer if your only issue is that youre a big dude

No offense but if you stretched your bike 9" and can't tell in the corners you weren't running corners at any rate of speed that would equate to what a sportbike can do :fact

You must have had some huge chicken strips to not notice a stretch.

.....

well I personally love my r1 stretched, it will still wheelie if I want it to, but I feel more control thru the turns, feels like a tron bike, so to speak.. 6-9" is perfect, as far as a newer model, its all about what u like want and can afford..my r1 is custom painted and chromed, I bought a zx14 to drag, and just got a ducati 1098 for the weekends, havnt even seen the bike yet.... gotta enjoy everything man.. I love all sport bikes mostly, cant have them all, luckily u can sell urs and always get a different one

Much appreciated. I look to stretch it soon. Just a lil bit tho but the info is handy. I am totally new to ride and starting to get a feel for her. So please forgive if the questions sound outlandish, but I really don't know the terminology used between Ryders. Final question. "When is it best to change your rear tire?" I bought the bike uses and with pretty good tread on it but after getting into a bit I just heard about having a "chicken cutlet?" Does that mean its time or I still have some ride left on it. I'm a novice so it's not like I'm doing burnouts and anything crazy just casual riding (above 75mph) so should I change now or later? Input needed
