Top speed indicated on speedo? 05 R1

I know the top speed a speedometer will display has been posted on here before. I tried searching and waded through a bunch of posts but couldn't find it.

Is it 189 mph?

I also know the stock speedo has a ton of error in it. And you need a gps or speedohealer to really verify it.

I just wanted to know because i had never toped my bike out, high speeds were scaring me down the VIR back straight. But last weekend we found ourselves about 300 miles from anything on a straight road where we could see forever. I topped the bike out and I swear the speedo said 190 mph but I thought it only went to 189? I know my first shift light came on I think I have it set pretty low for like 12,500 I'll check. I was going up and down little hills and the speed would go down as I went up the hill then back up as I came down the other side.

Anyway it was fun as heck and I can't wait to go to VIR again so I can keep it nailed down the back straight and not be scared.

Thanks

186mph=300kph.... I think this is right. Someone correct me if I am wrong. I thought that it would not read over 186mph in stock form. And that was the gentlemen's agreement from the 4 Japanese builders. Again in stock trim.

Where in NC are you? Im in Raleigh and the only road we really have around here to jam on (as far as top speed goes) is I-540. I know some roads going down the beach though that are awesome for rolling flat out.

Also anyone know what the speedo goes up to on a 2000 model R1? Im interested in knowing that as well.

I too am in the Raleigh area, and would say the best road for topping a bike out is US1 south btw Wanut St. and Cary Parkway. They just widened that road to 4 lanes and its down hill and straight for 2.5 miles. I recently topped my bike out in 6th gear and it went to 13,400 RPM which according to the www.gearingcommander.com is 192mph. It indicated 189 from about 12,600 which is actually 181mph.

I know that stretch. Dang man-you weren't worried about the Cary police? They seem to be all over that area.

I topped it out when I went on a 500 mile ride last Friday, the 4th. I did it somewhere way out in WV VA area. I honestly don't know where since we covered so much ground it was just a really long straig! LOL

Well shite! I swear it displayed 190, going that fast thought it wasn't like I was staring at it. Like somebody said 190 189 what's the difference! Wish I had a speedo healer.

I not much of one to speed on the free way's but if I were to pick one around here i would come up the 55 at about 6 am on a sunday exit on I-540 East and peg it from there. There's litterly no traffic on that stretch anyway and I take that route when I go on my weekend rides leaving at that same time and it's deserted every time.

speedohealers are well worth the investment, especially if you ever want want to change gearing and keep your speedometer accurate. The top speed function is a really cool feature too:yesnod

Datsun280 -

I didn't know about a top speed function? Can you recall the top speed?? That would be sick made if they have that option.

yup there is a wire with a little button on the end of it(the wire is pretty long so you can mount it where you want to) that hooks into the speedo healer. just hit the button and highest recorded speed flashes on your speedometer for a second or two. Its a pretty cool feature for sure:thumbup

I have speedohealer V4, I dont think the V3 has that function

Haha. I'm 167.

It felt like there was a lot more bike left, but the engine just starts pulsing at 186 for me. :dunno

Not that I mind, 189 vs. 186 isn't a huge difference, but it seems strange that so many people report those two different speeds.

I've seen 189 on a OK country road.. uphill no less. I think the speedo stops but I'm pretty sure the tach doesn't :secret::cool:

I've only done 181 (Indicated) going uphill, It kinda had trouble getting there so I think its pretty much all she had. Maybe 186 if I woulda stayed on it for a few seconds longer but I figured indicating 180+ was good enough for me.

Take it from me... I also live in NC and there's a section in Madison county where you can go straight down hill for about 2 miles. STEEP hill... Steeper than Old fort. Anyway... Straight down pegged: 189mph indicated. I've seen 189 indicated on flat ground... so I know I was doing better than that. It just will not indicate past 189.

This was on my 03.

I had a 04 R1 and the fastest I took it was 181 on my dash and everything was just a blury, on a dyno my bike did a top speed of 191 (dyno reading) but I don't know what my dash said because I couldn't see it. At those speeds you are covering so much ground you don't actually know how long it took you to get there.

Anyone have any more on this? Evidently the speedo doesnt quit reading at 189, so at what number will it go up to? I mean it is digital with 3 number fields-does it go up to '999'?

The speedo can probably read 999, but your rev limiter won't let the engine rev that high.

On my bike, stock gearing, non-speedo healed, the engine cuts out at 186. It won't read any higher. Some people see 189 on stock bikes. Don't know why it's different.

If you took the governor off, you could probably get it into the mid 190s on a stock bike.

Man Said 189 The Other Day With -1 +2 Gearing No Speedohealer I Think Its A Waste Of Money My Opinion

I took my 05 to 189 on the speedo. Stayed on it and got a couple more rpm out of it too. Stock gearing.

Again, the speedo quits at 189 but the bike will keep going... (depending on riding conditions)
