Weird Headlight Problem

I have a 2002 R1. Here is what is happening.

I start up the bike and get the engine going.
Walk around to the front of the bike and both of my headlights are out. Only the small round lights are on. Both left and right signals work. I make a fist and give the headlight (Does not matter if it's the left or right one) a light tap and both head lights come on. Now when I'm riding, no matter how many bumps I hit (and I have hit some that have bounced me off the seat) they will not turn off.
Now I shut the bike off (could be for 1 min or 1 day). Fire up the bike so that the engine is running. And I get the same thing happening with the headlights. I make a fist and.....well you know the drill.

This happens about 75% of the time. The other 25% is that I start the bike up and the headlights are running.

Before I take the bike to the dealer has anyone ever seen this happen before?

Sounds like the headlight control relay sticking, it lives just behind the headlights on the centerline under the bracket that holds the instruments. It has red/black, yellow/black and black/blue wires going to it. When you have the problem try giving it a tap instead of the headlights. Might have to disassemble some stuff first to get at it properly though.

Thanks for the tips guys,

Funny thing is that I went for a 5hr ride yesterday with a group of friends and did not have 1 problem with the headlight. But I'll still take a look at that relay.

Thanks again.

Ok headlights finally died can't get them to turn on anymore (My tapping the headlight trick no longer works).
So I ordered both relays. While I was waiting for them to come in I figured I might as well start taking the old ones off while waiting for the new ones to come in. I decided to try to figure out which relay was bad by doing the following.

I would fire up the bike and turn the bike off by hitting the kill switch next to the throttle (Normally this would keep my headlights on). Then I would tap on my headlights and I can hear 1 relay clicking like crazy (But still my headlights would not turn on). So I figured that was the bad relay.

Well the 2 new relays came in and I only replaced the one that I heard clicking (No headlights)
Then I relpaced the other one (No headlights)
When I tap on the headlights again I could hear the NEW relay clicking like crazy.

So now I'm convinced that it's not the relays. But I have no clue what it could be. Does anyone have any ideas on what it could be?

I had the same problem a while ago. There is a wire that runs from the cpu. the cpu sends a signall to the relay when the ignition is turned the cpu actually turns the lights on. In my case my uncle (skilled mechanic) checked all the wires and relays all were good, when he tested the wire from the cpu no signall. He bypassed the cpu and rewired it to the battery so when the ignition is on so are the lights, it's been problem free since. I was a little concerned that it might be an indication of an inpending cpu failure, but it's been about two months and no other problems. Hope this helps.

03 R6 Headlight Not Turning

The same happened to me and was at night and far from home! :22: I was able to make it alive home without no lights. It was until the next day I started looking into the wires and relays, I had some new relays laying in the garage; they were all good. sticking my tester to any wire connector with 12+ and groung signal. I got to the YELLOW/WHITE(stripe) on the low beam relay and put ground to it and beams lighted up!:tocoo: I track that wire to it ends and leads to end on the ecu as well. And maybe that answer someones questions. As " Up North" user had same connection for over a year I will leave it as is and see what comes next.

it's been a year and a half since we re-wired the lights directly to the batt, and no problems. In my previous post I was concerned about an impending CPU failure, but this was not the case. The bike has been electrical problem free since the Mod.

hope this helps.

Hello

It was a while ago and I am going from memory (I am away from home working). The original wire that went from the cpu to light relay we cut, (we did not do any thing to the cut wire) we then re-wired the relay to the iginiton bus, so, when you turn the key, the ignition bus becomes energized and sends voltage to the new wire, to the light relay, which illuminates the lights. This is essentially what the cpu did, but by doing it this way, you by-pass the cpu altogether. I was only a spectator and it was a while ago, but if you need more info I can talk to my uncle who engineered it.

p.s. since the re-wiring there have been no other electrical issues with the bike, hope this helps.

the problem I had was both lights were not illuminating, if only one, of your lights, are in fact turning on, it's a different problem from what I describe.
So if you changed the light bulb, or inspected it and it looked good , or swapped it out with the other side light bulb that is working, and tried it on the failed side ,with no illumination then you may have a problem with the plug, replace the light plug, and try again.

Problem solved. Turns out the where the main wiring harness and the headlight harness meet up there is a mount that holds the fuse box. Its connected to the radiator via two bolts and then the radiator mounts to the frame. The bolts on both were SOOOO loose they were about to fall out. When I tightened all these bolts my headlights had no more issues. Seems that this junction box needs to be properly grounded. Makes sense that everyone has this headlight problem after many miles because these bolts vibrate loose....

AZRider, I know that you posted this awhile back but now it is my turn with the headlight problem. I've looked at all of the wiring and traced it like crazy. I am aware that there is a mount that also has a rubber backing for the relay that mounts to the side of the radiator but this is a relay for the radiator fans. There are two other relays located in between the instrument gauge and the front cowling and these control the headlights. What junction box are you referring to and is it the same as on the 07 R1?

I'm having the same problem and it turns out that the relays are bad. Definitely take a multimeter or something that'll tell you if power is getting to the headlights.

The previous owner of my bike modded it so that both headlights light up with the ignition. I strongly do not recommend doing that mod because it will usually lead to a short circuit, melting either the relays or connectors.

Well, it wasn't actually the relays. Checking continuity through the wire harness from the headlight -> front to rear main harness is good, rear main harness -> ECU is good. Guess the ECU is not properly grounding the connection. If I connect a wire to a ground, the brake side headlight lights up. Gonna try to see what's going with the ECU.

Intermittent problems like this can be the most difficult to trace or diagnose. It usually means there is a bad connection somewhere but its not quite bad enough to be faulty 100% of the time. Its on its way out though. If you suspect a relay is stuck take a very small screwdriver and VERY LIGHTLY tap the side of the relay with the handle. Its much cheaper than just buying new parts based on a hunch.

The next thing to do is trace the entire circuit in question and check all connectors. Check for loose or pushed back pins and weak connections at splices. If you have modified anything electrically this would be a good place to check also. The real problem is that circuits can test good even when they are not so you cant rely on the meter but instead physicly check each connection. Like I said intermittent electrical problems can be very diffictult to track down so be patient and very thorough.

Headlights for 08 R1

From what I am reading the problem I am having is pretty much the same.

DESCRIPTION:
I start the bike, everything is good. After a little time, all the headlights (low beam & high beam) and the dash background light go out. The signals , tail-light , horn, speedo everything else works fine.

I leave the bike for sometime and come back, and everything comes up fine as before (head-lights and dash background light) working.

TEST:
I checked the fuses and they all looked good.

QUESTION:
- Does this mean that my headlight relay is bad?
- If so, how do I go about testing it?

NOTE:
The only electrical change I made recently was switching the OEM tail-light to the aftermarket tail/signal integrated light.

I was having this problem with my 03 R1 were the headlights and the backlight on the gauges were not working. It turned out to be the connector on the wiring harness behind the fairing on the left side of the bike. i disconnected it and the red/yellow and the black wire looked burnt and corroded. I used a wire brush and cleaned both sides of the connector and added dielectric grease and the headlights and gauges work perfect now. Ive read elsewhere that some people have actually cut the red/yellow wire and spliced it together to fix this problem. Hopefully this helps.

I have an 08 stock and had my lights and dash backlight go out after bike wash or riding in the rain, I checked the harness as suggested by someone on a you tube video and found the plastic around the harness brown from overheating and eventually melting. It seems that there is a common problem with the harness connection my question is has anyone go back to the dealership or to Yamaha to see if this has been recalled? I found recalls in UK and India for this exact same issue so why wouldn't it be recalled in North America. I guess if everyone fixes the problem on their own Yamaha will never do anything about it.

Lighting harness question

So, I'm trying to dress up a project bike. I took off the headlight wiring harness and there were a few wires in question. The only ones I can't seem to figure out are two blue with red strip wires that were cut and left free by the previous owner. Aren't these turn signal wires? There were no front signals on the bike when I bought it so I can't really test them right now. Anyone know where I can find a lighting harness color chart, I don't have the manual and I already looked online. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm having the same issue with my headlights not turning on. I'm not sure if the relays are bad or wiring. I remember one day hearing a click click click noise up in the front of the bike and then it went away. I didn't think anything of it at the time. Lights were still working then. Does anyone know what the noise was from, the on/off relay or the dimmer relay? Please help. Thank you.

I looked at all the plugs and wires on the left hand upper fairing and they are not burnt/corroded. Do you have a picture of the specific white plug you are referring to? How many prong? So are you saying that its not on/off relay or the dimmer relay. Anything more info would greatly be appreciated.
