What do you think of a Ducati 748 vs 2005 R1 for a beginner?

Friend of mine is looking at bikes and he's pretty new to the scene. He was looking seriously at a 05 R1 for $5200 but is now looking at a Ducati 748 with 19k miles for $3500. I obviously like the R1 more but the less HP Ducati may be a little more manageable for him. I really don't know much about Ducs but I'm guessing parts and maintenance may be a lot higher? What is your guys opinion?

= My 150 pound friend is tuning 21, which double shot should he go with for his first drink? He's thinkin 151 Bacardi, or Everclear. I think the 151 will be more manageble. What do you guys think?

Honeslty man, the first bike question has been tossed around A LOT in the little bit of time I've been part of this forum. Im not going to be one of the guys that really gets on you and all that. As a matter of fact, fuk it, get the Ducati. This way when/if he does lay it down, it'll be too expensive to fix quickly, and maybe he will have time to rethink the whole Sport bike, first bike thing. If not, more power to him. Guys start out on powerfull bikes all the time. The CAREFULL MATURE ones are USUALLY THE ONLY FEW that make it. Seriously I know a handfull of guys that just went straight into dealerships bought bikes, and then after actually riding it, decide they need to go to a MSF course. But again, not all, so hey. Have fun riding with your friend, sorry for the long reply.

I agree with most neither is an ideal starter, but if he's going to go with one of those 2 I'd say the 748 would be the better choice. The twin would be far more forgiving of poor gear selection and other rookie errors, and the engine braking would probably be of benefit, not to mention its got a third less power to get him in trouble.

Sorry guys, this was a double thread. Most of this conversation was in the other thread. He ended up getting the R6 which I think was a pretty good choice. A lot less low end than the R1 so a little more manageable. I did test ride the Ducati for him and it was sort of a POS with a wasted clutch. Thanks for the input.
