There have been other threads that talk about this subject in great detail, but I've always heard that unless you have heavy engine mods you should put in whatever octane your owner's manual says.

I generally use premium (91-92 in my area), but have been forced to use regular (86-87) and my bike still ran just fine...

I use Shell V-power 93 octane. Sunoco Ultra 94 octane is also available, but I prefer not to use gas that contains ethanol.

The Yamaha Canada engine dude said that all you need is regular unleaded as the higher octane fuel takes longer to burn because of all the additives. He also said to stay away from ethonol blends. Also, to stay with the "big" gas stations such as Texaco, Shell, Sunoco and such. They have better gas and is constantly fresher.

I used to put in the higher grade stuff then I started putting in 87-89 octane and the bike runs just as good.

gets no better than top grade shell.. if its good enough for Mike Schmacher.. its good enough for me..

the octance stuff doesnt matter if you dont have serious engine mods that would change the internal combustion or compression ratio..

but shell only puts its best cleaning additives in the 93 mix.. thats why i'd stick with that one..

Try and rotate your gas too. Because each manufacturer uses different types of additives, so if you keep using the same gas you can have some build up. Here in Cali alot of cars are having problems with it.... just an FYI

the higher grade octane the harder it is for you engine to ignite it...........it is recommended to use the lowest grade that dosent cause engine ping.

I try to keep 93 (mobil, BP, amaco) or 94 (sunoco) in her. Only once... down in Deals Gap. I had to go with 87 octane. Only gas they had and I was miles away from another gas station.
